Albion forced to wait on Currie
By Brian Owen

Albion are still playing a waiting game after agreeing terms with Darren Currie.

Seagulls boss Micky Adams expects to add the former Ipswich and Derby playmaker to his squad once loose ends are tied up at Luton Town.

Currie would be Adams' fifth signing as he plans for the new League One season, which starts at Crewe on August 9.

The Albion boss, heading back last night from a pre-season trip to Ireland, said: "Everything has been agreed with Darren Currie. We are just waiting for the paperwork to be signed. I don't know when that will happen."

Fans heading to the friendly at Worthing tomorrow are likely to see striker Glenn Murray and new wideman Kevin McLeod in action. Both missed the 0-0 draw at Athlone on Wednesday with minor knocks.

Albion again expect to keep Doug Loft out of the action as a precaution though his foot injury is not considered serious.

Adams does not want, or expect, his side to be firing on all cylinders as they take on Ryman League opponents.

He said: "It's a tough schedule for the players but I've never seen an easy pre-season.

"I don't expect them to look sharp at Worthing. If they do, I've got it wrong. I want them to look sharp at Crewe on August 9.

"We had good support at Athlone, which was nice to see. We hope to see a big turnout at Worthing."

Players are likely to be limited to 45 minutes each against the Rebels.

I have to say I'm getting a bit worried by our wage bill and all these oldies coming back to Brighton. I hope they're all on short contracts and know that, if they don't perform, they're out. Mind you I don't really understand our club any more. We seem to prefer bringing back a whole load of old crap (who moved on to supposed better things and all failed) and wacking them on our cash commitments for a few years is better than bringing on a team of solid, local talent and showing clear year on year progress. Let's hope I'm wrong.

I agree with you. They seem to have gone into a 'must be Championship contenders by Falmer in two years ´ panic mode. All these older players will need to be replaced by then. I hope having gone down this route they are prepared to pay for it.

Older players ?

Apart from Currie and Forster(who we already had) .... every other player we have signed is 30 or below. Virgo is still only 25 for crying out loud. Anyone who watched the team last season could see we need a bit of experience to mount a promotion challenge.

spot on. We are building a solid rather than an exciting squad which may well have enough depth to get us there or thereabouts this season. The fireworks will come from Murray (if we keep him) and Forster One will thrive on crosses from a decent winger and the other from running on to through balls from an attacking midfield. Expect Currie and McLeod to both start - especially in home games:thumbsup:

we let 11 players go and are probably bringing 5 in...
All on free transfers. I wouldnt have thought we have stretched that much.

As for the older players argument, as someone said all below 30.
We needed more experience to make a proper push this term.

Older than the youth we are no longer going to develop (Release of Rents etc., sacking of Wilkins).

My point was that this is a more expensive option and needs long term financing not just getting us into the Championship for Falmer.

But has been shown, the young players we released aren't good enough, the club need to be in the Championship for when Falmer opens. We have released 10 players and so far signed 4. They will be on bigger wages than those released but rather spend money on players who can cut it at this level than those who are struggling to

Not convinced by your maths, chaps. A number of those released were first or second year pros.

If you are counting those, then you must also count the new scholars given pro deals. That means 10 out, and NINE in [including Currie].

The way we are going is the typical MA way, get in tried and tested players to get us out of this division. If we can do it this season so much the better, that will give us next season to consolidate before the 'old hands' get too old. When we got promoted under MA last time nobody had ever heard of Oatway Watson Carpenter Brooker etc the most well know was Paul Rogers , who incidentally I suggested to Barry Lloyd signing when he was at Sutton Utd but it was never taken up and he moved elsewhere.

You make a good point, didn't really factor in the new pros, but my point was that would rather pay wages to one good player than 3 youth teamers who aren't going to feature.

You are clearly wrong... the players we have brought in ALL have good experience at Championship level... if Currie signs, then that will be true of him too... the players we released ALL had to go, with the possible exception of Cobbs, who never got a chance, IMHO... the only mystery retention was the Loftster... all in all it has been an excellent close season so far... if Zamora came back, then wold you be saying that is a backward step? It is not as if we have brought back Riochard Tiltman...

What? Better to sign only youth and players in their late 30's?! Absolute bollox...

The simple fact is that MA brings far more chance of success than Wendy, so Wendy went... great decision, IMHO...

Rents had to go... he was awful in every game he played last year...

Getting us into the Campionship for Falmer is vital... how else are we gonna fill the place?
