We will become like the European norm with 70% of people renting within 10 years , not because they want to but because they have no choice. There will be fat cat landlords with protfolio's of buy to lets.
I don't think we'll be like the rest of Europe. Despite money being harder to get, culture differences should keep us a little different to Europe (in terms of home ownership).
When people want to get a mortgage or re mortgage I believe 8 out of 10 people wil not be able to because of the changes in criteria. They will become mortgage prisoners paying whatever their lender wants on their svr. Self employed, self cert, ltv over 75%, any adverse credit and people with an interest only mortgage.
If it's as bad as that, people who move will have to sell (or become landlords) and start renting, so prices will fall. Not all good for landlords with their portfolios falling in value.

Most mortgage brokers nowadays need a secondary income.

A mortgage adviser and his partner have been jailed for 12 months after police raided a brothel run by the pair in Standish, Wigan.

36-year-old Guy Lovelady, who ran a mortgage advice business, and Emma Gill were found guilty of running a prostitution agency from above a pet shop. The business employed 15 prostitutes until complaints from local residents led police to uncover the brothel last September.

Police searched the property and found a diary showing takings of at least £19,000 over a six-week period and details of clients who had arranged to meet prostitutes in nearby hotel rooms.

The Wigan Evening Post reported sexual paraphernalia, a camcorder and over £1,000 in cash were also recovered by police. Both Lovelady and Gill pleaded guilty to controlling prostitution for gain.
