He is without doubt quality - quality doesn't go away.

Doesn't go away?? Of course it bloody does, otherwise we'd still be playing Mark Lawrenson at the back, a tasty midfield of Brian Horton, Danny Wilson and Jimmy Case, with Peter Ward running around knocking them in up front.

Age gets to everyone, and Danny Cullip hasn't had a good season since his penultimate year with us.

If Cullip is "past it", then what does that make Butters ?

I've not seen enough of him lately to make a judgement to be honest. I was of the opinion last season that we were crying out for someone of his experience to come back, think I might even have started a thread saying as much. But we have got a bit of experience in the squad now, so I'm not so sure he's exactly what we need any more.

The fact that Cullip was quality at Championship level last season....but apparently is 'past it' a few months later, cause he had one shocker of a reserve game

In 20 appearances for QPR, they leaked 40 goals (including 10 yellows and a red). He has not had a single game since the start of October and there has not been a huge rush for his signature, despite being out of work for a long time.

How exactly is 40 goals goals in 20 games quality?

He's training with them, he hasn't signed for them.

Good luck to him.

He wasn't in the gym today so there may be some truth in this.

The most curious thing..
The Gillingham BBC page currently says....

"Gills set to sign former Seagull

Cullip was most recently at Championship club QPR
Gillingham could be on the verge of signing former Brighton and Nottingham Forest defender Danny Cullip.
The 31-year-old, who made over 200 appearances for the Seagulls, has spent a few weeks training with the Gills.

Manager Mark Stimson said the club would like to sign him until the end of the season to add some much needed experience in the relegation fight.

"With the leadership skills he's got, even if he's not playing it might still rub off in training," Stimson added.

"You can see he's an old pro but he's got great vocals. We've got some old pros here but they're not very vocal.

"Danny was with us for a week a couple of weeks ago and he's come back as if he's been here all year," said Stimson.

Cullip was most recently with Championship club QPR."

Currently nothing on Gillingham website.

Was he bollocks, An ex-colleague of mine has the misfortune of being QPR fan and his view was that a bit of pace and DC was screwed ... royally.

The difference between DC and Butters is that Butters reads the game DC doesn't, wqhich means as though he's ancient he can still compete. Danatto at Depor didn't run, but still tied up anything that barcelona or madrid could chuck at him and he was 42 !!!

DC days are gone, hence the fact that he wasn't snapped up by anyone. Remember him as he was ....

Lets face it WW, if Wilkins had brought him back you'd be whinging that we shouldn't have signed the has been. :thud:

Hiope he signs for Gillingham and plays against us as Forster will skin him alive on the ground, and him, Cox and Murray will pick up the loose ball after DC has made one of usual cock ups with his headers which he used to do for us at his best, so even more likely now.

I've never really understood why Cullip gets such bad press on here. Regardless of whether he is/isn't the player he was, he did a fantastic job when he was here, and was an integral part of two championships and a play off final. His influence in the squad was immense.

Good luck to him at Gillingham, I hope he does well and proves a few people wrong.

If he was "quality" at Championship level last season why:

- did he get very few games
- did QPR release him
- did very few clubs show any interest in him

The answer - because he is past it. We've had a chance to have a look at Danny Cullip and we have decided he is not up to it. Move on for fucks sake.

Danny Cullip = Legend, but he's had his day.

I don't see anyone disputing any of that. However, that does not make him someone we should be signing now.

I wasn't specifically referring to this thread. Search 'Cullip' and just look at the amount of people slagging him off as a "bad influence" "bully" etc etc. Cullip was a leader and an excellent player. The point I was making is that too many people have short memories.

Something along those lines, yep.

I don't neccessarily think we need to sign him (hell, it's the midfield that needs reinforcing), but for people to write him off simply because he had one bad reserve game is completely ridiculous.

Robbie Pethick has been released by Tiverton Town - perhaps we should sign him up for the rest of the season.

If he was "quality at Champ. level last season", WHY the **** is he in the reserves now??

Sorry, I meant for you to ask yourself that question, but couldn't wait that long.

Because there are better defenders than him at QPR now....
