Whats the best way to go about it?

I have a quote for £75 return car 4 passengers with P&O ferries so that works out about £19 each

Or

£167 With EuroTunnel about £40 each.

has anyone travelled by both and is the tunnel worth the extra £20?

£167 for the tunnel? If you go earlier in the day you can get it cheaper than that. We always book the 6am time slot and are going in June for £97 return.

PS The tunnel is a lot quicker, 35 mins travelling, loading and unloading the train is also quicker.

Depends where you're going once you get to the otherside. Portsmouth to Caen on the overnight ferry is a civilized way to go and also cuts out the horrible schlap to Dover and the speed camera hell of Calais to Paris. You need to be going South otherwise it's waste of time going that way though.

Would have been earlier in the week with the weather we've had, otherwise it's generally more expensive and boring although quick. Much prefer a ferry myself, it's part of the holiday.

Assuming you need Calais then I'd always use the tunnel unless there's significant travelling to do on the UK side (say 3hrs+) and I needed to rest, eat etc before continuing.
For western, southern France and Spain/Portugal wouldd probably go for an overnight ferry from Portsmouth/Southampton to Normandy.

It's not just the weather. If the French go on strike the ferries don't run but the tunnel still operates.

You can always try 2 cheap day returns on the tunnel. If you go off peak you can do it for about £50 on a cheap day return, then just book the same on the way back and don't use the other coupons. A mate who lived in Nice used to do it all the time, he reckoned he saved himself a fortune

basically there 3 cars of four going over and were staying in a friends house somewere in northen france, apprently we need to go to calais.

we are only going for a long weekend finishing mid day on the thur and back sun night ready to go back to work monday or we would go earlier in the day

I was looking last night and going at awkward times ie late at night or early morning it worked out at £48 for car and passengers on tunnel and £25 car and passengers P & O.

Brittany Ferries out of Portsmouth are the most expensive by a long way.
