Cricketers guilty... and jailed (merged)

would you be given that much time if you killed someone while driving while drunk or using a mobile? when there's money involved, straight in the jug you go, makes you fuckin sick, if any bookie is greedy/stupid enough to take bets on no balls, time of throw ins and other shite that has no real impact on the final outcome of a match they get all they deserve

thanks for merging the thread, didnt see the other one. Just to clarify my point on this, i'm not defending them at all but surely a life ban is sufficient

Very sad day, do hope they serve their sentences and get to play cricket again someday. They are all such great cricketers and are very young, easy to get caught up in this hope they get a second chance to redeem themselves.

This is to act as a deterrent to anyone else thinking of doing it. This case revolved around no balls, but there were also discussions of brackets, where you bet on a certain spread of runs being scored in a given bracket (which might be say one or two overs), and this is something that is bet upon legitimately. Incidentally, they haven't been given life bans (I think it's 10, 7 and 5 years for Butt, Asif and Amir respectively). Which leads me on to...

I don't. They should never be allowed near a cricket pitch again. They have driven the sport through the mud and will lead to the casting of aspersions every time something slightly unusual happens on a cricket pitch for at least the next ten years. I think the prison sentences are about right and hope that they drop the ridiculous appeal against the ICC ban (and that the ICC extends them to lifetime bans).

Asif is 19 an unbelievable cricketer and pleaded guilty, you want him banned for life?

Yes. I think anyone found guilty of corruption should be. Why does it matter that he's an unbelievable cricketer? You could argue (justifiably) that he was only 18 at the time and made a silly mistake, but I'd say to that

i) he still knew clearly what he was doing, and must have known that it was wrong
ii) he seems to have developed little sense since, appearing in two different cricket matches since his ban was in place
iii) maybe seeing one of the potential stars of the game lose his livelihood at such a young age will put others off doing it.
