It's quite simply because the English only compete on a levelish field with the Aussies in three team sports: Cricket, Rugby Union and Rugby League.

The passion is just as intense in all of these but cricket is most obvious at the moment.

Essentially the poms have a bit of a bee in their bonnet about the fact that years ago they shipped the bad eggs over to this big desolate rock down in the quiet half of the world only to discover years later that the same big rock was actually rather a nice place and all of a sudden the down under club recognised this and stopped letting the Brits in. Nowadays Britain is crammed full of folk who are sick of it all whilst Australians have more than enough space to swing a Wallaby and aren't too disappointed with their perpetual sunshine either. HOWEVER they recognised they were onto a good thing and closed the borders...

Alas Benny Hill and Are You Being Served did however make it through the border checks..
