I am considering relocating up that way to have a slightly shorter work commute, and it seems to be the best value for money....

I know it has a horrible reputation, but surely there is somewhere decent to live there?

It's a dump ... but I believe the old bits of Ifield are a bit better than the rest.

I'd try Horsham ... only about eight miles away and a much much nicer town.

To be fair there are plenty of places to live that are ok just avoid bewbush and broadfield

I moved here for work in 2007 here is a list of likes and dislikes

Likes

Taxi's are cheaper
Dominos till 5am
u can be in bluewater in 35 mins
Logistically its fantastic u have a south option for travel
24hr frequent bus service
24 hr trains back from London
Fish and chips delivered
33 mins to London bridge on train
23 mins to Brighton on train
Great cinema
Pubs surrounding crawley are great lots of good country pubs not to far

Dislikes

The town centre is awful and I have never settled or enjoyed socialising in town so still socialise in brighton or London

That's it so to be fair it has more going for it than not ......I quite like it here it opens up a whole new world cos of its logistics and I can get to brighton centre quicker from here than I can from where I lived in brighton using public transport

Oh and the post office is open till 6pm for collecting parcels and 8pm on Wednesday.....all the parcel depots are on manor royal to and open late

I worked in Crawley for nearly 30 years. I have made some good friends up there but I wouldn't want to live there.

If I did, I would probably choose Maidenbower, Pound Hill, Three Bridges, Furnace Green or Tilgate.

I wouldn't go for Bewbush or Broadfield, which are Crawley's equivalent of Whitehawk and Moulsecoomb (which I won't slag off as some Nscers live there and I don't wish to show disrespect).

I lived there some years ago. Shopping and transport was very good, pubs terrible. Avoid Bewbush and Broadfield and beware estate agents descriptions, they try to disguise some areas ( Cottesmore Green may sound nice but it's still Broadfield) . Pound Hill was nice , especially Milton Mount. Ifield Green good but rest of Ifield dodgy. Maidenbower is horrid modern pokey rabbit warren. Best housing is often the early new town commision stuff in areas like West Green, Three Bridges and Pound Hill. Langley Green was known as Langleydesh when I lived there. Found the people really nice, generally the aspirant working classes, lots from London ., but I was there a 15 years ago.

I know where I'm better off Scampi, I have worked in Crawley and that was bad enough, it's not all bad here.
I live in Newhaven ( well Denton) and I've lived in Crawleay and I think both have an unfair reputation. I'd much rather live in both than say Moulsecombe or Peacehaven or (shudder) Haywards Heath.
