Instead just continue to mutate every year, but we will learn to live with it and we'll just end up carrying on as normal, with the most vulnerable offered annual vaccines (like they currently do with flu)

It never went awa, just mutated. This new variant is quite virulous. My son and his family came down with it 3 weeks ago after flying back from Turkey, and a couple I know got it flying back from Canada two weeks ago.
