John Barclay, who most definitely is a lovely bloke, played nearly 300 times for Sussex and averaged about 25 - not too shabby, particularly when he was opening batsman against fearsome pace bowlers. Marshall, Roberts, Garner, Holding, Croft, Hadlee, Procter, Daniel and Rice all played regular county cricket in that era - I don't think too many openers averaged more than 30.

Groome never really looked like a batsman and I saw his highest score. He wasn't convincing during that, either

Also, Imran Khan always said that Barclay was the best captain he ever played under.

Oh no! I've got into a Wisdom war! I only looked at 1974 and he had that one innings of 4. I think I'm a bit prejudiced as I saw him come on to field as 12th man once and he dropped a sitter! I'm also wrong about Johnny Barclay - he did indeed open (with Gehan Mendis - what a fine player he was) as he got established within the team. He was a much respected captain and I don't think I've ever heard a bad word said about him. And he might be the only person anyone has heard of with the middle name Troutbeck. And talking of posh blokes he played for the county at around that time let's hear it for MJJ Faber who died tragically young.

Those suggesting an England call up on the horizon for Wells are jumping the gun a touch. One good year doesn't erase a mediocre career. His career average currently stands at 37.62 and whilst far from the be all and end all, I'm not sure it's particularly harsh on him. A Lions call up can't be too far away though.

I'm trying to think if Sussex have ever had a worse specialist batsman. I'm sure they've had in the past when someone who just went to the right school would go out to have a bash, but in the professional era? Hard to think of anyone ... and I remember Jerry Groome and the Hoadley brothers. Evans makes them look like Bradman.

Eoin Morgan got loads of Test matches with a first class average of less than 35. Ed Joyce got none despite an average over 48. Go figure!

I know there's outliers. Morgan got there through looking good in the one day set up. Joyce was unlucky to be at his peak age at a time when the England batting line up was very settled. The point I was trying to make is from what I've seen of Wells (which is plenty) I don't think that overall first Class average is particularly unfair on him and I'm not sure he has other strings to his bow that help him out in terms of getting to the England side. He likely needs another strong season or at least strong start to next season before he gets noticed.

Vaughan and Trescothick were picked for England on the back of relatively modest country records n'all as the cricket hacks are so fond of reminding us.
