What other option is there at wk? And don’t say burgess . He can’t stop the ball .

As for captain - I’d have Chris Jordan all day

I'm not saying he shouldn't keep, I'm saying the team shouldn't be asking to guy to take on that much responsibility.

How many keepers have successfully kept,. captained AND papered over the cracks of a poor top order? We need Brown's runs but if you overload him he won't keep bat OR captain to his potential.

I see Luke Wright has retired from F/C cricket with immediate effect - white ball only from now on.

Looks like we'll have Brown at 6 for some time yet

Jordan's season will be interrupted by England duty. All T20's and potentially as an ODI squad player. Brown is perfectly capable, I see no reason to change him. He bagged a pair, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as it's the first game of the season in early April.

The batting was poor again. The 4 experienced players in Wright, Wells, SVZ & Brown have all had major injuries within the last few seasons. The inexperienced batsman in Haines, Salt and Finch all look talented but need the seasoned pros to pull them through. It feels like Finch has been here forever, but he's only 24 with around 30 FC games. Evans, Rawlins and Burgess are worth a go too, if batsman continue to fail. I see those three as ODI specialists... but if those already playing continue as are, the replacements can't do worse. I'm optimistic the batting can click.

My team for Durham would be:

Haines, Salt, Wells, SVZ, Wright, Finch, Brown, Weise, Jordan, Robinson, Hamza

Harsh on Briggs, but the pace attack with Wells as back up is good enough. If Briggs plays, I'll move Wells back to open and drop Salt, Haines or Finch.

Finch unlikely to play due to hand injury after taking catch off no ball. Jordan was going at 5 an over at some points, and there was no danger from any Sussex bowlers apart from Robinson, although Wiese was better this morning. Brown has bailed us out numerous times last season, I hope this game is a one off. I think the three roles are very challenging and we are at risk of losing Burgess if he isn't used. He is highly rated by similar clubs to Sussex. He went toward the end of last season but has done well for us many times, am fortunate enough to be able to watch most of our games - getting used to Div 2, not sure we have much chance of getting out this season.

Does anyone have any insider info on this Wright decision? It seems incredibly premature bearing in mind he’s been working on his red ball game all winter and we’re not exactly in a position to bin off decent, experienced batsmen?! Not great timing after that defeat either.

From Wright’s recent comments it appears it is not really his choice either so seems a slightly harsh way to treat a player and top bloke who has given so much to the club.

So wright spends the winter working on his red ball game, then retires now.....and it’s all happy families on the club statement.
Odd on quite a few levels.
How can we afford to lose such an experienced batter with the line-up already so thin ?
Couldn’t Gillespie have let wright know, say last October , that he wasn’t in his red ball plans ?
Is wright going to be replaced with a quality signing ? ( I can guess the answer to this one)

You’re being too diplomatic . It stinks .

Can we ask about the religious affiliation of the current Pope?

What does concern me (and I've mentioned this before) is the number of white ball specialists we have at the club. That's Wright, Evans, Mills and Beer (and Khan, of course) who play only LI/T20 cricket. For a club that's not particularly rich, that's a lot of money tied up in occasional players

Beware - this could be life after Jofra Archer, who we will be unlikely to see in Championship matches very soon.
