Countdown2Falmer updated.

There are a lot of photos on this update so please be patient as the page downloads.
The trophy for the most amount of photos in one shot, goes to Hans Kraay. I uploaded 145 photos.

Please also click the banners, I went over the bandwidth limit last month so a few extra quid can get a bit more for the final few months.

Thanks to:

Superhuman effort - and one which receives scant praise on NSC.
88,000 hits should tell you how much it's appreciated.

So, let me get this right...

1. You've taken user generated content from NSC and posted on your site.

2. You're asking people to view that content on your site, and not NSC.

3. You're asking people to click on the banners on your site to generate revenue (this is against the Google ads Ts & Cs and can get you removed from the programme)

4. Meanwhile, I've just had a £500 hosting bill this month for NSC that needs to be paid for.

Surely if anything it helps NSC, since those images can be viewed via his website rather than NSC? I understand that the loading of images is one of the biggest bandwidth rapers of a site. It's not like he is directly linking to the NSC images, they are hosted on his website (e.g. http://www.countdown2falmer.co.uk/apr11/010411-1.jpg)

Personally I think it's great that all the images are available to view in one place, it makes things a lot easier, and of course that's going to cost a bit of money to host, so the advertisements are there to help pay for it. I do agree that he should not be asking people to click on the links though, irrespective of whether it's against Google T&Cs or not.

ok for a start I have been doing Countdown2Falmer for months. You know this bozza, and now you see fit to complain about it. Unbelievable. In fact I am complete shock here.

Many people have liked countdown2falmer and I would have thought it has done you a favor because it reduces your bandwidth so people can look at the photos on my site.

I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours putting these photos up for peoples enjoyment. I don't make any money out of this whatsoever. I never did this for money, because I am not that type of person. Money means f*** all to me, I just wanted to raise some revenue to help pay for my costs to.

How much money do you think Countdown2Falmer has taken in the last 12 months from ads clicked. Take a guess. Yes £80.00 f***ing poxy quid, with the rest coming out of my own pocket.

I guess this spells this now spells the end of countdown2falmer, why do I bother.

I appreciate all that Adrian (presumably?), I really do...

...but encouraging others to move away from one site to another AND ask them to rack up some ad clicks whilst with you is not what I consider good etiquette.

I'm not sure why it spells the end of your site. It's a great collection documenting the building of the Amex and one that will, I hope, live on indefinitely. I'd gladly help out in that regard if at all possible should you feel you want to pull the plug at any stage. But that doesn't change the way you should go about these things.

(And as I've said a zillion times - NSC does not have a bandwith related cost issue. We can serve up as much bandwidth as we want.)

2 questions, so I know where I stand on this issue.

1) Is it ok to advertise Countdown2Falmer on NSC like I have been doing for the last year and a half
2) Is it ok save photos from NSC?

That's all I need to know.....

No, it is not OK to download pictures from NSC in order to feature them on another website without asking permission from the photographer (be they amateur or professional). The correct way of going about populating a website with images is to contact the photographer directly to ask if they'd like their pictures featured - outlining the conditions that apply. If the person who has the right to enter into an agreement is happy to have their images used and is content with the proposed picture licensing arrangements, the images are supplied directly.
But up to now I've always assumed that is what you've been doing.

1. For now I am happy and, in the long run, that is likely to remain the case for your particular site. However, I do reserve the right to change my mind, but will notify you and others if and when that takes place.

From next season I am going to be far more stringent on people advertising their commercial sites on NSC. The scale of NSC is now such that I don't think it right that people freeload off our large userbase without giving something back to the community.

Additionally, sitting behind NSC is software that enables blogs, photo galleries and the like to be quickly added. I haven't used any of that yet, but it is likely that I will look to do so at some point in the near future.

2. The photos are not mine to give permission to use - you'll need to speak to the photographers concerned which I think you generally do. This is obviously a small-scale non-commercial operation and in most (probably all) cases, NSCers are likely to be happy for you to do that. But you should ask, of course.

(If I had some clause in NSC's Ts & Cs saying that any content you provide, including all photos, are available for NSC to re-use (maybe exclusively) then it would be different. But I don't!)

In two months the site will be completed. There will be no more photos and countdown2falmer will remain static. There will be no need for me to promote my non commercial venture on here anymore.

Regretably, there appear to be complications, unknown to the common man, affecting or indeed relating to this site.

Would just like to say, as a non contributing photographer, and purely an enjoyer of the Countdown2Falmer site, that it has been a fantastic experience over very many months to be able to follow progress on our fantastic new home. If this has compromised other interests then, for that, I am sorry

It seems to me looking on the site that anyone can post photographs on there and can receive appropriate acknowledgement accordingly.

Whilst lacking understanding of the 'political' situation here, I hope that any impasse can be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.

Good Luck

Best

+1, I don't want to get into any politics, but I have really enjoyed looking at the progress of The Amex on countdown2falmer, and appreciate the hard work that has gone into it.
