[Politics] Count Binface's manifesto for the 2024 London Mayoral election.

It it?

Is it really?
It is. I read lots of comments about no-go areas of London, and marches being very dangerous, but when I was in London in December for the weekend, I was walking down the Strand towards St Mary le Strand, I stopped to ask a copper, monitoring the march which of the two churches was St Mary. He was helpful and nothing was intimidating about the protestors/marchers.
London is the 14th safest city in the world.

It used to be that a vote for Binface or for The Greens wasn't a wasted vote as you still had 2nd preference. The Tories have done away with this, which is a crying shame.
I would love Binface to come second pushing the ludicrous Susan Hall into third or even fourth place.

Well. Up until a couple of years ago, I was there regularly and could say yes with solid first-hand experience.

I have less regular experience of London in the last 24 months, only been in for a few days at a time about twice a year, but I haven’t suddenly been dodging knife attacks or gunfire.

What there has been in the last 4-5 years is a sustained right-wing attack on our capital city, the people and places within it I find much the same. If you hated London a decade ago, you’ll still hate it now, but it works.

Ultimately if Sadiq Khan is that unpopular he will be voted out next month.

It does beggar belief how the Conservatives can't rustle up a fairly liberal candidate to run. Boris Johnson pitched himself as such a thing and won, admittedly against a Ken Livingstone who went a fight or two too many.

And worth shouting out. They changed our perfectly good and fair electoral system because it clearly wasn't working for them.

What isn't working is their god awful candidate selection.

They are either 1) Covid lockdown party goers with inflammatory views, 2) had to stand down for "personal reasons" or 3) Back to the inflammatory views with a basic misunderstanding between the difference between "dropping your wallet" with "having your wallet stolen" which was thankfully pointed out by a right leaning LBS presenter.

The reality is of course the Tories NEED Khan in Office. They can pick up on his "faults" (many are out of his control OR are the result of the Government policy) and try and hoodwink the voter into a "better the devil you know" decision in the general election. They couldn't give a stuff about London.

Tactically it's back fired massively both locally and nationally. All they've built up is an online hatred of Khan from dubious social media characters who've never sat foot in London.

I don't support any political party. Labour getting in with such a huge majority is bad for democracy. Where the Tories will find MPs to sit on select committees is anyone's guess. But the Tories have brought it on themselves.

Yes often forgotten about Boris how Liberal (*) he was as London Mayor and also how technically the best Mayor in terms of instance improvement (Livingstone) had run out of steam.

Livingstone got in (over the original Labour candidate) because Tony Blair tried to force a candidate on us.

We stuck two fingers up to Blair and will stick two fingers up the Tories who are shaming our home.

(*) Boris was also very liberal with London's finances. Effectively wasting almost a billion pound on vanity schemes.

I like most of what you wrote as usual, but take issue with this. Most of the country doesn't care about London. Lee Anderson didn't take Ashfield because of Sadiq Khan's mayoral performance.

In fact I'd say it was a source of embarrassment for them that by far the biggest and most important city in the country consistently rejects the Conservatives. Their latest candidate is truly awful and sums them up.

I think we agree. They don't care about London, but are fed lies about London to frighten people into voting London elsewhere.

I don't think it's really an embarrassment to them, they gave up on winning London years ago but have been using it as a tactic for years. Whether that be referring to the "Islington elite" or in recent times using the race of Mayor (and by extension other residents of that race) as a weapon.

It has spectacularly backfired because yes, London is a "Labour City" in many regards but Khan's highly probable re-election will be world news just prior to a national election.

Trump (bizarrely) made him that figure.

The pivotal moment for me was Labour taking control of Wandsworth Council.

Under the Tories the most efficient council in London with the lowest council tax in the UK. Binface is evasive on this issue, but I think it must be the lowest in the galaxy as well.

Led to a cake and eat it voting behaviour where many residents clearly voted for a Labour MP but secretly voted Conservative in the locals and lied to their friends about it.

Arguably there is a large degree of headroom available in terms of what many Wandsworth residents can afford to pay in council tax.

But they sent the message out they would happily adsorb potential council tax increases to remove the Tories both locally and nationally.

Very well put.

Personally I don't mind a big majority. If this triggers excess this will also trigger the order of the boot in the next election. Thatcher had 3 big majorities, as did Blair. Like them or not, they both got things done.

Since then we have had more fragile majorities and leaderships promoting mad Big Wheezes (once in a lifetime referendum to stay in the EU; whoops! Er....Brexit!....Er.....Rwanda!) to harvest votes, while infrastructure disintigrates.

His extended ULEZ scheme is clearly a precursor to pay per mile in the future as no way they would invest that much money in infrastructure for cars that will organically phase out over the next few years.

Must pick up on that. Khan did simply what Johnson did. Investigate the feasibility of pay per mile as a solution to alleviate congestion and both decided not to go any further.

Worried about the loss of fuel duty after the switch over to electric cars, Sunak also investigated a national road charging scheme when he was chancellor.

All scaremongering and where true, simply mirrors the same activity of whoever is in office at the time.

You still have a choice in that you choose not to go there. I can go to Croydon to Ikea so nothing is stopping me, which isn't the definition of a no-go area.
