It may end up looking like bad judgement employing in the first place. If there is even a sniff of proof that MPs phones were hacked under his watch (even if he wasn't aware of it) he really can't stay on - irrespective of your politics.

And of course, I'm sure the NYT would take great pleasure in scoring a point or two off Murdoch but what's wrong with that if justice is seen to be done from our point of view.

i would have thought they could land a heavier blow by sending him down. not giving the "evidence" to the police suggests its hearsay and insubstantial, they wont risk their sources on that and would rather just smear. if there is nothing substantial i'd rather the police didnt waste their time getting involved in a corporate tit for tat. if there is justice to be done, let have the real information provided. for one thing it will make the whole saga get dealt with quicker and the rest of the media lose interest.

The fact he's moved into the political arena pretty much means he must be both a liar and incompetent.

Just far enough away from LDC
there have been a lot of potential sleaze stories that havn't made it to press (or been given significant coverage) since the coalition was formed. Coulson is one whereby his salary (reportedly 400k of which he is funded partially by the taxpayer to the tune of 180k) is way in excess of that given to any of the labour spin doctors of the last 13 years.

But of course it's his job to make sure he doesn't become the story and up til now he'd done a good job. People I know who've met him say he is a decent man (well for a journalist) so perhaps the incompetent line is more likely.
