Really hope not. While it appears rules have been broken, it would be just heartbreaking for all the other players who performed excellent in the qualifiers and worked their arses off.

While they've been in 3 world cups - all in the last 20 years - for a small nation like that there is no guarantee that it isn't a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I'd say there is a limited difference in quality between Ecuador and Chile... and generally not in Ecuadors favor necessarily.

Think Chile are the ones pushing the most for this.

I thought this had already been through the process and Chile's objection thrown out? I take it Chile refused to accept that and have kept pushing then?

I suppose it's possible Ecuador could argue they fielded him in good faith in full belief he was eligible, unaware of his true situation. FIFA could then take a lenient punishment.

It doesn't seem to be in doubt that, even if he was born in Colombia, he has lived in Ecuador from a very young age and is, presumably, a citizen of Ecuador. There are huge numbers of international players not representing the country of their birth - I remember there was a conversation over whether Kasper Schmeichel might choose to represent England because he qualified on residency grounds. Why the controversy over this one?

I don't think the issue is the fact he was born in Columbia and is more to do with the legality of his Ecuadorian citizenship. It seems as though the player concerned may have used fake documents when being given Ecuadorian citizenship. It appears as though he used false name and date of birth on a birth certificate issued in Ecuador and an there is an audio recording of him admitting to using this fake document which was given to him by someone instead of his real birth certificate issued in Colombia.

I've done a lot of research on this topic and feel that it's safe to say that Ecuador will not be banned from participating in the World Cup. The audio that was leaked in England, where the player claims to be Colombian, is old and already dismissed by the Ecuadorian judicial system. The Ecuadorian federation did not field the player until the Ecuadorian courts corroborated that the player in question was indeed an Ecuadorian citizen. There is no way FIFA's ruling can supersede the judgment issued by a sovereign government. With that said, I'm looking forward to seeing Moises, Pervis, and hopefully, Jeremy participate in the world cup!
