I wouldn't want their job for all the money in the world. they are constantly photographed, gossiped about, criticized and followed wherever they go. they are expected to do countless meet and greets and be ambassadors while walking a tightrope over what they say, wear and do.

Every aspect of their lives are scrutinised and documented and sod being a royal kid. They are front page on every magazine and paper every day and god forbid if they step out of line with a wrong skirt or dare to hold the baby bump.

They deserve double.

a lot of young woman attempted to board the gravy train; er... enrolled at st andrews uni when it became public knowledge where wills was going

Brighton / Hove actually
Britain couldn't have become the largest empire ever without the royal family, and whether one believes if the empire was good or bad thing, we all benefit from it today as a country including the tourism from people who love our Royal family more than we do.

Parasites don't donate £344 million to the treasury from the Crown Estates. Strong and inaccurate language doesn't help truthful discussions.

Inaccurate language doesn't help truthful discussions, as you might say. There is no donation about it. Any profit the crown estate makes is paid to the treasury in lieu of the monarch funding government whilst remaining head of state. It's not a donation. It's not a gift. It's not the royal family somehow 'chipping in'. That is public money.

Yes, the Queen is the head of state of Australia which is why you have a Prime Minister and not a President. In fact she is the head to 53 countries in the Commonwealth, including the one below, and Queen of 16 countries

Err.......yeah....thanks?

Absolutely. The UK gets hundreds of millions if not billions of pounds pumped into the UK economy just because of monarchy and history. I personally don’t really care about them, but getting rid of them would be a mistake of Brexit magnitude.

er....

There are almost double the visits to the Palace of Versailles per year than the UK Royal Palaces / Residences combined.

The Crown Estate is not the personal property of the Queen.

https://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/en-gb/resources/faqs/

The Crown Estate belongs to the reigning monarch 'in right of The Crown', that is, it is owned by the monarch for the duration of their reign, by virtue of their accession to the throne. But it is not the private property of the monarch - it cannot be sold by the monarch, nor do revenues from it belong to the monarch.

The Government also does not own The Crown Estate. It is managed by an independent organisation - established by statute - headed by a Board (also known as The Crown Estate Commissioners), and the surplus revenue from the estate is paid each year to the Treasury for the benefit of the nation's finances.

In 1760, George III reached an agreement with the Government over the estate. The Crown Lands would be managed on behalf of the Government and the surplus revenue would go to the Treasury. In return the King would receive a fixed annual payment - what later became known as the Civil List.

Ok so you sack the royalty. That does not give the government carte blanche to rob them of their personal land and houses. Some of the estate belongs to the people ie Buckingham Palace but Windsor and Sandringham are privately owned. Windsor was built by William the Conquer.

How much do you think it would cost to run properties for a President. Buckingham Palace could be used in the same way Macron uses the Elysee Palace? It would still need staff and security.
Renovating Big Ben is already costing £61million, and Westminster is taking £3.5Billion and 15 years to complete. I don't seem to see threads complaining about that?

It wasn't surprising when the French were starving to death and the Austrian Queen said let them eat cake. The closest we have to that ignorance now is Jacob Rees-Mogg and his sister.
Are you suggesting we guillotine them and seize the Rees-Mogg millions?

Actually, the richest person in Britain is the Duke of Westminster, who isn't royalty.

where did he get his initial investment capital from?

How much do the Crown Estates give to the Treasury? That bit always gets left out for some reason.

£344million is how much.

I bow to your superior knowledge on this TB, but didn't the royals willingly sign over the income from the estates in exchange for a fixed income and the transfer of funding the armed forces and diplomatic service to the tax payer that had previously been a royal responsibility?.
Now the estates are making more money, they want to renege on the deal. It's like selling your house than demanding it back years later when it's gone up in value.

As for European countries, there is a royal family in Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. A Duchy of Luxembourg, and Principalities in Monaco and Lichenstein.

how much money does the commonwealth donate to betty?

Where does it say they want to renege on the deal (which has been in place since George III got into debt trying to keep America)?
It has been agreed that some of the residences need to be renovated so the Queen is getting 15% of her own income back now instead of 10%.

The Civil List then became the Sovereign Purse. Only the Queen receives anything from the Sovereign Purse now Prince Philip has retired.

I agree it doesn't belong to one particular monarch and has to be kept for the next one, in much the same way the artefacts in the royal residences do. The Queen cannot sell the paintings for example.

So now take the RF out and it will be less? Add Brexit and even less. The Left and the economy don’t mix.

When did the deal include building a minor Royal a private home ?

It's scandalous. The Royals are more than privately wealthy to fund this.

2.4m benefit payment, nothing more nothing less.

Evidence clearly shows that if you get the Royals out of the Palace tourism increases :)

Not suggesting they go (far more things wrong with out constitution) but it needs to modernise.

It's a pittance compared to the vast amounts wasted in Westminster and Whitehall by our greedy politicians and self-serving mandarins. Some people can moan about expenditure on the royals if it makes them feel better. I'm quite relaxed and not bothered about it, thanks very much, and staying that way.

The Royal Family are a form of UK business that is hugely proftitable and this refurb bill is merely an overhead cost in the Profit & Loss Account of that business.

Just as a salesman wouldn't make many sales if he rocked up in a beaten up banger, or a model wouldn't get much work without top quality make-up the Royals need a decent pad to live in, it's part of the pomp and pageantry that fuels the tourism.

Then the Treasury should be in for a ''Bumper Pay Day'' in IHT when the Queen Dies, due to the Value of her Estate - I think NOT.

I am sure they have been beavering away to make sure that none or very little IHT is paid in that eventuality because this Monarch is the first one to have been brought into the ''Tax Paying'' public but I guarantee that we will see very little IHT being paid in that eventuality
