Imagine a world where Premier League teams would take 5% of their income from global TV rights and use it to support the local community through making it cheaper for people to watch football, rather than suck every possible pound out of normal people to be able to afford another luxuary car for their backup left back.
Watching live elite-level football regulary is not a basic human need. We have far greater issues in this country than the fact that taking your kid to a game a few times a season will cost £60-70. The Albion's loss-making charitable arm has community projects that will make a tangible difference to lives, and they probably do use a fair percentage of TV income to fund stuff.

Imagine a world where clubs support their communities in far far more ways than just letting them watch football. I know, they could have a Foundation!!!
Imagine a world where every single Premier League club is throwing coffee money on some charity or foundation.

"Thanks to the £20m we brought in in matchday income, we've been able to spend £30k on wheeling around some sick kids in front of our cameras and £19m on some random Julio Iglesias who'll pay his taxes in Cayman Islands and prevent a 100 other kids getting adequate healthcare", says 20 PL clubs, always met with the reaction "oh, look at little Steve, we're such a generous and nice club" by all 20 fan bases.

I love football as much as anyone here but lets not pretend pro football isn't a fat tumour on society. £2.5b funneled from the pockets of normal people who want to watch their team into the pockets of some 500.

20 clubs that for some 100 years of their lifespan couldn't survive a year without their local community becomes rich almost over night but they don't want to spend even 5% of that wealth to make life easy for those who supported them.

Dumb and greedy is what it is. The PL is your biggest cultural export and those who pay the most for is those who live closest to it.

Nah to me it can't be justified however much it is twisted. Tell every player in the PL to take a 10% paycut so that every fan can get in for a symbolic fee £5-10, and tell all the players that refuse this to go f*** themselves.

Imagine (some pop star recorded that) a world where musicians take less money and charge £5 for their gigs.

People in Britain can watch football for a few quid. Non league football for example.

the Premier League gives something like £1.6bn (billion) to grass roots football, a lot more than the 5% you suggest. Albion in the community gives something like £20m, or ~10% revenue.

We've got a whole board full of lifetime Albion fans here. I don't think any of us needed to be matchday mascots, and most of us became fans when we were far shitter and less fashionable to support than we are now!
As a kid I was far more exited to go to the Goldstone on a school night than any PL game at the Amex as an adult.
Being a mascot never crossed my mind I wanted to be on my milk crate in the North.
All the American rubbish fireworks light shows, flame throwers adds nothing IMO.
Can we just watch the f***ing game is my first thought.

Which is how it is supposed to be. "Unfortunately my team got promoted so I have to be make a class journey before I can watch them" is not how its supposed to be.

Developing a Stockholm syndrome around getting ripped off by fancy footballers, their agents, and all the clubs accepting it, doesn't change the real nature of charging people £50-£100 for watching 22 people kick a ball for 90 minutes. Its virtually usury.

Its good to see fans of some clubs wanting sports to be the inclusive all-classes-and-corners-of-society thing it was meant to be. Dubious if they will be heard in the mass of affluent football spectators riding into the defense of the business practices of these 20 teams and the 72 EFL teams that want to be just like them. But those knights of modern football can't have any complaints if they find themselves priced out in 10 years - they begged for it.

Ah yes. The selfless charitable act of increasing interest in football.

Thought the coke selling lad around the corner was a wanker but maybe the "first one's for free" was his way of giving something back to society.

£50-100? I paid £37 for a ticket tonight, and I'm not a STH. I'd say that stacks up favourably compared to a west end show for example and is about the £5-10 more than entry to horse racing or a professional rugby match.

You can buy tickets for the west end fairly cheaply too, but most seats are north of £60. Your point is diluted when you overstate the problem.

Had to google what "West End Show" is and its some sort of entertainment spectacle where nothing anyone does matters because its all written in a script. You can channel the energy and desire of your entire community and Hamlet is still dead as death at the end of the fifth act. Romeo gets Julia because Jordan Ayew doesn't show up in the 94th minute to f*** it up.

How many spend their week nervous ahead of, or raging the day after, the "West End Story"?

Likewise ice hockeey, rugby, balet, horse polo, Masterchef, John Cleese, Top Gun and Top Gear can all go eat, shit and die compared to football.

Its all fake bullshit designed to make you escape reality. Football on the other hand - ooga ooga booga! Its made for us to indulge reality!

Football is the largest people's movement in the world and if you can provide your local or national population with it for free through funding it with people who feel they can afford to pay to watch it on tv - take the chance with both hands. Imho.

I mean, would your local pub make you pay more for you beer if a million random people in China paid £50 to the pub to watch you drink it?*

*not entirely thought through and could be a terrible metaphor but you might get the point if there is one

This is just word salad, frankly.

If the revenue stream is that important to the club, maybe the mascot package thing could be re-balanced such that there's an equal number of selected-at-random Junior Seagulls paying nothing and the same number of paying mascots with their parents paying more than they currently pay such that the mascot monerary books balance as they do at present

you asked for a world where 5% of TV money is put into local community. when it's shown far more than that amount is already put into the community, make some crass drug dealing reference. about 2 hours to completely reverse your opinion.

Personally, I think the price is far too low...

I would willingly sell my house and all it's contents to help a youngster become a mascot for a day...

Making it even harder for the parents who can afford say £300 and no more. Leave it alone.
