Australia is one of he best places in the world to spend time. Unfortunately because of the weak pound and strong Australian dollar you will need twice as much money as you think you need. It is a very expensive place to visit and you need to work your money out carefully or risk having to move on earlier than planned.
Consider spending some time in India or Sri Lanka it's amazing value and both are fantastic places to visits.

I survived on less than a fiver a day in the far east. That was 15 years ago though. Japan will rape your wallet.

Thailand is not cheap by the way, went to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand last September for 20 nights, cost £3k. Total flights cost around £900.

Terrible advice, you won't meet people if you don't stay in hostels. Australian hostels are awful though, definitely avoid them if you can, unless you're 19, anyway.

Some far-east diving operators can be decidedly dodgy, old, damaged kit etc and the last thing you want (or expect in warm water) is a free flowing reg or leaky BC. One bloke I know hired kit abroad and the inflator started blowing up his BC at 30m, he was lucky not to ping straight up and get bent.
Get over to http://www.yorkshire-divers.com/forums/forum.php to get info about far east diving, loads of people there who have been and who live out that way will be able to tell you not only where to go but who to avoid.
Definitely the best way of going about it, but do try and book Xmas/New Year accommodation asap (i.e. in the next month if possible) as hostels do fill up really early and you don't want to be stuck miles away from anything. Some places insist on a minimum stay of 7 nights around this time too.
A really good alternative to hostels is couchsurfing. I've used it on several occasions and had a really good experience. www.couchsurfing.org

Get a camper van. The freedom of winging it but with the added bonus of knowing where you're staying and what its like. If you are going on your own I think you'll meet people no matter where you'll stay.

Tosh. If you only meet people in hostels then you're not trying very hard.
Over the years while backpacking I've made good friends met in hostels, hotels, bars, restaurants, on mountain tops, on planes, trains, buses, in museums, and one literally I walked past on the street. If you're the sociable type you can make friends anywhere, especially when on holiday.
