It is something a lot of people have been asking online. The virus has been detected in stools so there is a chance.

However (and I am being serious) the current medical advice thinks underwear and trousers / skirt etc.. would stop the actual transmission of the virus (if not the smell) into the air.

There would have to be a particularly unique set of circumstance where a fart entered a persons mouth (or eyes) at close proximity without the barrier of underwear and clothes.

If you follow the current Government advice on "social distancing" I'd imagine the possibility of the above happening is very very low.

It wouldn't be the smell that would transmit the virus but rather the microscopic pieces of fecal matter that may be expelled during a fart which you might then inhale either orally or nasally.

As a previous poster has already stated there would have to be an exceptional set of circumstances for this to happen.

Having said this if you indulge in certain sexual proclivities with an infected partner then this scenario is entirely feasible, although you are just as likely to catch it from them through the more normal modes of transmission.

An example of the exceptional circumstances which would lend themselves to the manner of transference to which your enquiry relates can be found by googling the words "fart" "jazzy" "jamison".

And also this one from the British Medical Journal which deals with the specific question of inhaling fecal matter from farts or flatus to give its correct medical term...
