Corners! A waste of precious time?

Could be worse. Remember the fashion for horribly lame short corners at Withdean?

Use to do short corners under Mullery at The Goldstone as well. Never scored from them.

TBH in all the years I have supported the Albion, I don't ever recall a period when we were prolific at scoring from corners!

Over the last couple of years only Calde looks a real threat on corners. Often wonder why we leave Bridge and Bridcutt back for corners, as much as Liam is small he may be a suprise package in a crowded penalty area and Bridge being a defender must have some areial power.

Maybe we should mix up our corners, they never seem to be hit with pace.

I seem to remember us scoring loads when Watson put them into the near post for Bobby to flick in.......that was a while back now though.

Watto did have a sweet foot for dead ball situations and the Bobster was just ....... well prolific!

Right. We get corners and then just tap the ball over the line for a deep throw in for "them".

Or.we abandon over complicated routines and get the ball into the box between the penalty area and the six yard box and ask our striker(s) to do the job as per spec.

Of course, this would require the corner taker to clear the first defender EVERY time. This may be a lot to ask a well paid professional footballer, and could require some time spent on the training ground to make it happen. The fact that most schoolboy footballers used to be taught this "skill" snould not be lost to us.

Similarly, any player taking a free kick and hitting the wall should have his goolies cut off.In public, then and there.

What's the sense of attacking "up to a point" ,and then wasting the opportunity because of kindergarten errors ?

As spectators we pay a lot of money to watch our team slaughter the opposition, not piddle about with over complicated training ground routines. At base, football is a simple game.So keep it simple.

Ball in box from corner, ball in net.

Thank you.

just to put the record straight, Greer scored from a corner at Burnley this season. Pointedly if I recall it correctly it was an Orlandi cross beyond the faar post.

Goals from corner ratio appallingly low and our big defenders should be getting their heads on these.

In regards to Mullery's time, we did score a fair few from corners out to the edge of the area where Horton would be waiting to drive it in.

Deffo this, esp on the occasions the opposite decide to all stand in the centre circle, and defend from there.

very frustrating to watch isn't it...........we need someone who is lethal in the air.........Adebayor, Lambert any one....?? , and before you pan the shit out of me for saying it(wages) ...........if we did manage to go up we wouldn't last long in the prem with our current squad......with all these players capable of whipping in tantalising crosses i reckon a good old fashioned , aerial proficient striker is just what we need.....hope we get one in jan.......where did santa cruz end up....??

We've only got 7 weeks and 120 more corners to wait before DD tw@ts in every other one, for us.

Worst example of this was at Leicester away.
Ball is played into the box, Barnes goes close with a header, goes out for another corner.
All of us screaming not to play it short, Dicker goes short to Bridcutt loses possession on the edge of the box and Leicester counter

At least we don't sing 'Ooh It's A Corner' anymore. That had to be one of the naffest chants of all time.

The closest we got out of the 19 was when we did the backheel special, which got us 2 or 3 goals last season. At least with Orlandi we actually have someone that can do corners. Special player.

We should do a Barcelona and never lob the ball in, just an opportunity to start passing again. That'll be popular no doubt!

Look! Lets stop pussy footing around and admit that we don't do corners. They're for other teams - not us! We roar when we win them and groan when we take them. And they're dangerous! Very dangerous!!

What do I mean? - well just think about it!

8 home games - 78 corners - 10 per game. Scored from one? No. Sniff at a goal from one? No. Lost possession from one? YES! YES! YES! Left our defenders stranded high up the pitch? YES! YES! YES! Threat of breakaway goal? YES! YES! YES!

So what's the answer?

Well, we could spend the preceding week(s) practicing, inventing and creating an imaginative portfolio of short, backward, unusual, tricky or down right devious plays that retain possession, suit our players and lead to a genuine goal attempt rather than hoof the ball into the area for our tiny little players hiding under the armpits of our opponents giant defenders to hopelessly scrap for (scraps).

I haven't checked it out - but it may well be within the realms of possibility that somewhere within the laws of football - hidden away, in some way out bylaw - there is little clause that says words to the effect of:-

"In the case of the offensive team, in the judgement of the match officials, having won a legal corner kick, without causing an infringement, without interference from the weather, spectators, gulls or insanity - may forfeit the right to take such kick: In which case the match officials will pass possession to the defensive team who must take a goal kick in the normal manner."

Under these circumstances, it would be a whole new ball game - what? - No! What I mean is that within a few seconds our gallant midfielders or devastating defenders would have regained possession, regained control, regained composure and the whole process of displaying the awesomeness of our attacking prowess would recommence.

Worth..... what do you recon? 8 - 9 goal difference per season? In this league - difference between top 6 or relegation.

PS Can't get used to these new dentures - tongue keeps getting stuck in cheek.

None of our starting 11 have the skill to score from any form of cross let alone a corner ,Gus needs to change the tactics if we are going to start winning games

Statistically, fewer than two percent of corner-kicks lead directly to goals.

Well,there's corners,short corners,and statistics.

When "Oooh it's a corner " goes up,statistically 96.872%* of fans want the ball in the mix.

*based on a survey of the six blokes around me in the WSU.

I've long wondered why we don't try lifting players up like in a rugby LINEOUT.

Think about it. Orlandi swings the corner in, El Abd and Crofts grab Barnes, lifting him high into the air above the opposition defenders, and BOOM - he crashes a downward header into the corner of the net.

Give me one reason why that WOULDN'T work at least 15 times a season.

I honestly think we'd have a better success rate if, for every corner, we chipped it to the edge of the D for Bridcutt to VOLLEY into the top corner, a la Scholes or that Turkish bloke. We'd have banged in at least one by now.
