Can anyone advise on if it easy easy to make a copy of a DVD using a PC? Do you need certain software or discs in order to play it back in a standard DVD player?

Of course, I in no way intend to copy movies - say, from a rental shop for example. I just have some family holiday movies I want to copy. ...and some of me and the missus of course

I have heard that using dvdshrink for ripping disks that are dual layer so that they can be put onto DVD-Rs. Apparently it works very well on retail movies copied from rental shops as you need to compress down the dual layers to single layer.

Ok, you will generally need a ripper to copy the dvd in the first place as most are protected. I use dvddecrypter but others on here use others I know, such as dvdshrink. Most are shareware and a quick search on google will bring them back, look for dvd rippers. Once done you will find that most of these remove region encoding as well meaning you can play the copy back on most machines.

You will need a dvd burner/writer and possibly a re-authoring tool but dvdshrink and dvddecrypter come with them bundled in.

It's not too difficult to do once you get it all sorted out.

All the best.

It does indeed. I have used it. It also removes region coding as well. You loose about 30% of the quality but it's not really noticeable. You can get quite a few rippers from here

I have (cough) heard that you can easily find a program called DVD Xcopy on peer to peer file sharing systems which makes it very easy to make backups of DVDs.

Otherwise you can use DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink easily enough. Always check you install the most up to date versions.

Just do a search for tutorials- they give you easy step by step instructions.
