Coppell wanted to stay

He is an absolutely class manager, simply amazing when he almost kept us up with one of the worst teams ever to play in the championship..

What a CROCK.
It's not true that Coppout wanted to stay - he simply was allowed permission to have talks with Reading, and if he didn't want to go he could have just not spoken with them, or he could have stayed anyway.

As it was, he was helping a struggling club with no money and little hope of much success or income growth - and he got a nice juicy carrot put in front of him at The Madejski. He did the right thing for Steve Coppell, and we got a bit of dough compensation.

The interview in the Argus states that Coppell was happy and wanted to stay. It's all history now which cannot be changed. Bloom has invited Coppell to The Amex.

Exactly.

In my opinion, Steve Coppell has always been an honorable man and maybe he knew how much the compensation meant to us for survival.

And didn't Tony offer him the job before Gus? I seem to remember something about Coppell being his number one target.

He's a great manager and he'd do a terrific job for most teams. He'll certainly get a good round of applause from me.

Absolutely this.

Someone mentioned about Barry Lloyd being a good manager...absolute rubbish....he spunked good money on alot of crap players and had two good seasons out of about 8 and this despite having a considerable more amount of cash to spend than Coppell or Magoo.

We needed the money, Dick took the compensation, and I can't blame him, he worked a small budget and done well.

You mean Dick Knight encouraged a manager to leave, got us a few hundred grand compensation - the money we needed for the club to survive? and then appointed a manager who got us promoted anyway, via a brilliant day out in cardiff which was great for the stadium campaign, and then gave us 2 seasons in the championship with no money to spend?

Erm, yeah, what a foolish decision.

Merry Christmas.

This

Well, as stated by others, he could have just said "no, I want to stay at Withdean and struggle rather than cash in with a club I can take to the Premier League and compete against the likes of ManU who I used to play for. I WANT TO STAY WITH THE ALBION!"

And of course TB will have invited him to The AmEx - as well as several other Albion servants I imagine. Magoo will probably be another, and since Leon Knight has a place among the legends flagged outside the entryway - he'd probably get in too.
Hey, Tony would probably invite you - as long as you buy a ticket!

I still find it baffling that even after all this time people still dig up things to throw at Dick Knight.

Sure Knight made mistakes but under his Chairmanship we had three seasons in the Championship. No he didn't have a big budget (1/6th the average budget) but we were damned lucky to have a club at that stage.

If Coppell wanted to stay he would have done.
