If the Coppell compensation helped keep us afloat then it was the right decision. imho.

Even if he'd stayed and we had got promoted (which we did anyway) there was no way we could have sustained a Championship team at Withdean, Coppell or no Coppell.

Plus, I heard he's got VD

You mean Dick Knight encouraged a manager to leave, got us a few hundred grand compensation - the money we needed for the club to survive? and then appointed a manager who got us promoted anyway, via a brilliant day out in cardiff which was great for the stadium campaign, and then gave us 2 seasons in the championship with no money to spend?

Erm, yeah, what a foolish decision.

Merry Christmas.

exactly this and besides Coppell took us down.

OP prob thinks Barry Lloyd was decent as well.

Coppell came in after a total f*** up with managerial choices and nearly kept us up. If he had been appointed at the beginning of the season then relegation would not have been an issue. He took Reading to the premiership with two players he had on loan at Brighton. Brighton were top of the table when he went and after he left they scraped through via the play offs. If he had stayed the chances are that the first game at The Amex would have been in the premiership.

Yes, Barry Lloyd was a good manager. As he said he built two good teams which were broken up because of the dire financial plight that the club were in. 90 minutes away from playing in the top tier of English football is a failure is it?

Without wanting to get involved in the Coppell thing, I never understood the vitriol aimed at Lloyd for getting us within 90 minutes of the top flight, but then I was young at the time.

A great manager but timing is everything, we clearly needed the compensation money. If we were at the Amex at the time he would have led us to the prem. Always felt he was a manager England failed to appoint, to their cost.

What total horseshit. That was in 2004, a full seven years before the Amex opened. We would never, ever have made the Premier League while we were playing at Withdean.

And if Dick Knight had not been there there would be NO Brighton & Hove Albion...Amex...Learn your history of the Albion please.

i take the story with a large pinch of salt. if he'd wanted to stay, he'd never have talked to Reading or left. the fact Knight gave permission doesnt have much bearing on his decisions.

What a CROCK.
It's not true that Coppout wanted to stay - he simply was allowed permission to have talks with Reading, and if he didn't want to go he could have just not spoken with them, or he could have stayed anyway.

As it was, he was helping a struggling club with no money and little hope of much success or income growth - and he got a nice juicy carrot put in front of him at The Madejski. He did the right thing for Steve Coppell, and we got a bit of dough compensation.

Agree in full with your first bit,as for England yet again i go with you on this. The guy always seemed to be clued-up and knew the position 24/7 365. His tactics and knowledge were top notch we will never know what went wrong at City sure there were rumours and there always are but has anyone actually said S/C could see the situ at City after week and what a pointless task it was (and looked what happened after failure and two relegations) I for one Palace or not would have been happy to see S/C as an England manager.

The best Brighton manager of my lifetime - never saw mullery or cattlin but his man management skills and manipulation of the transfer market were a sight to behold.

If you have a beef with this issue you are probably better taking it up with Newshound rather than Hugo.

Exactly.

In my opinion, Steve Coppell has always been an honorable man and maybe he knew how much the compensation meant to us for survival.

And didn't Tony offer him the job before Gus? I seem to remember something about Coppell being his number one target.

He's a great manager and he'd do a terrific job for most teams. He'll certainly get a good round of applause from me.
