I think Walt was thinking during the time when Slade was sacked. Wasn't he offered the job on that occasion and turned it down.
He was offered the job, and verbally agreed to it, but later turned it down upon learnng that there was no transfer funds available.

Nice sentiments from our best manager of the last two decades.

Various ex-managers seem to believe that we have got huge potential. I remember McGhee claiming that we would have had people swinging from the rafters if we were in the position of Reading.

Good point but didn't he say then he was after (holding out for) a higher level? Like Adams I guess, you should never go back!

Very rarely mentioned as a candidate for the top job, though. Surprising in some ways, as I have always suspected his tactical nous and knowledge of the game might be well suited to international football. I mean who would you rather have, Coppell or Allardyce...

Maybe the FA look at his Man City spell and think he might not cope with the pressure, but even if that was true that might be more an indictment of the media's attitude towards the England manager's job, than Coppell himself.

Pretty sure Coppell has ruled himself out of that one. Allegedly because of a fear of intrusion into his private life apparently.

He's a Palace legend, but also a man of the (football) people. If he was brought up in S.London and supported Palace as a youngster I'd probably feel a bit uneasy with these comments, but he's wasn't.

Very few people like him in football, an absolute gent.
