From the BBC:

Former Brighton boss Steve Coppell believes the club are capable of promotion once they move in to their new stadium.

Coppell spent one season in charge of the south coast club before leaving to join Reading in October 2003.

He told BBC Sussex: "Once the crowd return they're going to be very good.

"The chairman will support the club and they're capable of being in the top division. I look forward to seeing their progress in the future."

He added: "Whoever is in charge of the club when they get to the new stadium will be a lucky man."

The recently-appointed Bristol City manager also praised the club's fans for their loyalty during their time playing at Withdean Stadium.

"To have gone through what they've gone through and to still be surviving is a great compliment to the people of Brighton," he said.

"They've been terrific through incredible circumstances so I'm delighted for them."

I hate it when he keeps coming out with stuff like that. I need to hate "Mr Crystal Palace" but I just can't.

Very rarely mentioned as a candidate for the top job, though. Surprising in some ways, as I have always suspected his tactical nous and knowledge of the game might be well suited to international football. I mean who would you rather have, Coppell or Allardyce...

Maybe the FA look at his Man City spell and think he might not cope with the pressure, but even if that was true that might be more an indictment of the media's attitude towards the England manager's job, than Coppell himself.

Great manager and a class act.

Hopefully he will be invited to the opening of Falmer, along with all the rest of those who have helped and supported us in the fight.

If the manager at Falmer is going to be such a lucky fella Mr Coppell then why did you turn down the chance for it to be you?

Because it wasn't certain that it would ever happen, and was to be at least 3 or 4 (turned out to be 8) years in the future?

Always worth remembering he came on at least one of our Falmer marches.

What do the scum think of this? Isn't he a legend there

They're all closet Albion fans anyway. It's the only way they can look forward to the future.:albion2:

I'd say the offer came two years too early for him

not so sure he did the first time....was a rumour doing the rounds at the time that he was happy to stay but the club needed the compensation Reading were willing to pay ....as for most recently probably only he knows

He'd would have had to wait a very, very , very long time (in football terms) and nothing at all was certain when he left, which is why I guess he went else where to ply his trade, which we would all do, possibly, in our chosen professions? :albion2:

I think Walt was thinking during the time when Slade was sacked. Wasn't he offered the job on that occasion and turned it down.
