It's interesting that the story says that they're shifting through applications. If the shortlist is from the applications then it seems that SC is interested in the job.

However, the story doesn't say that the shortlist has been drawn up from those who have applied.

The Evening Standard says that it's a shortlist of "four".

And "names" them as Alan Pardew, Paul Hart, Gary Megson, Steve Coppell and Iain Dowie.

I get the feeling that a newspaper that can't work out how many toes there are on the average foot may not be telling us the story.

If you read the article carefully it is clear that the Standard are guessing. They do not say the four on the shortlist are... they are just naming some managers who have been linked to the job or who currently have a good reputation in the Nationwide, hence the five instead of four.
