Coppell does not want to cut his own throat by not signing for Reading only to find that we've not got Falmer granted and that he is out of contract with us by the end of the season. Not only from his own mouth, but revealing in as much as obviously DK would offer him a new contract regardless of Falmer.

I'm really gutted as the writing is now on the wall inspite of Steve's valliant attempt to dress it up.

Good luck to the man as you can't deny, albeit very grudgingly, that he is in fact walking into a better position at Reading, unlike Messers Horton, Adams and Taylor who took backward steps.

All this on a day when we go top makes it even more ironic.

Realisticly we now need to look forward, but the obvious question is with who.

Only George Graham or Bryan Robson could temper my disappointment and fustration with this recurring theme, brought about simply by our current off-field plight.

Manchester.
We'll need to find a new manager fast. I agree with DK in his interview that he doesn't want to be in the same situation as Reading are finding themselfs in at the moment. Played 6 lost 4 drawn 1 win 1. Just hope we can get a replacement with in a week.

I would like George Graham myself.

Fact is though, that because of Falmer Horton, Adams and Taylor all felt they were walking into better positions - and lets face it Adams and Taylor are both in brand new stadiums - if we had this they would never have left!

As much as I would love to see him back, cannot see Liam Brady leaving his cosy role at Arsenal.

The main attraction of the job is that the team are top of the league so some names might want to piggy back on the work done by Coppell to make a name for themselves before leaving to join a bigger club

Some interesting points there.

Can see his point, but it's not as if he's never going to be offered another job again. If he hangs around to take us up this season the offers will come flooding in, regardless of the Falmer situation. One would like to think that if we do have a new ground on the way by then then he would stay with us.

Only Taylor left with nowhere to go. Port Vale were in the First when Horton (before he promptly got them relegated) and Adams also went two divisions, knowing full well that the manager's job would be his within months. He's now the manager of a Premier League side. Hardly what you'd call a "backward step".

I think George Graham is probably a little out of our league. And Bryan Robson? I do hope you're joking!

A mathematical question.

1. Add up all the times a club has had to find a new manager when either top of the division or just crowned champions.

2. Subtract the number of times this has happened to the Albion.

3. How many are left?

The answer is probably 'not very many.'

Adams went back to being No. 2 at Leicester (same as at Forrest before us), before moving forward, whether or not he knew that would be the case. In fact his promotion was only accelerated due to Bassett's gross incompetence as they said that after 2 years was when he'd take over when the appointments were first made.

As for Port Vale, I suppose you've still got themdown to go up as as champs. They'll be lucky to get a play off place. Did you actually go there to hear the "big club" chants aimed at Horton 2 seasons ago?

As for Graham, I sort of agree with you, but don't like to rule anything out because we are, as DK confirmed today on SCR, a high profile club.

Robson certainly made enough mistakes to lose 2 cup finals, have points deducted and get 'Boro relegated all in the same season, so hopefully he has learned a few lessons along the way. But are we in a position to be THAT choosy when we know for certain that we will not do a Reading or a West Ham, being confined only to out of work people to select from.

No one seems to have emerged as an obvious front runner so I'd like to know who you favour.

Easy fella, no need to shout. :lolol:

Yes, but at the end of the day he went to a Premier League club. It was no great secret that he was being groomed for the main job, although you might have a point about the acceleration of his appointment. Even so, number 2 at a Premier League club, with the stadium and everything else, is still, IMHO, more attractive than the number 1 job with a skint Div 2 side playing in converted athletics ground.

I'm as surprised as anyone at their start to this season. For me though it just highlights what a piss poor division we're in. They're still a tin pot club and I'll be amazed if they're still their come next May.
As for Horton, when he left us we were in Division 3 and playing at Gillingham. By contrast, Vale were in Division 1. What you also have to remember than Vale were Horton's first club and he's always had a huge affinity with them.
And yes, I was there to hear the 'big club' chants. That was one of about 20 away games I went to that season.

DK's bound to say that. He's not likely to turn around and say "well actually we won't set our sights too high, because we are only a small club". Yes we are high-profile club, but we're not a big club. Not really. And we won't be until we get a ground that allows us to get the gates we could so easily get. Don't believe all the hype.

Robson certainly made enough mistakes to make a complete laughing stock in the managerial world. Which was a shame because as a boy I idolised him. I can't see him making a return any time soon.
You're right, we can't be that choosy, but I'm positive there are better people than Robson about.

Errrr. Can I get back to you on that? :)

How about big Ron Atkinson.

He likes the odd glass of Dom Pom and he is on ITV as we speak. Big Ron Takes Over at the Withdean!

Marvellous scenes.

OK safeway, I'll whisper.

Horton was one of around my top 5 Brighton heroes I guess. Could never understand why he went to Luton and we got Grealish. So I am bitter about the way he left us as manager especially after seeing him interviewed wearing a Seagulls hat on TV after that draw away to Chester when Paul Mcdonald equalised with a penalty days before he left us. Port Vale, from whom he came to us, and also being his home town club couldn't convince me, as was later proven and as we now know, he'd made a good career move (Remember this man has Man C on his cv)

I was unhappy with the way Adams left us after we'd thrown him a lifeline and by his own admission he was questioning his abilities around the time of losing 4-3 at home to Rochdale and 1-0 at home to Orient, before we got 7 against Chester the week after. We stuck by thru' his sticky patch long before the promotion season.

I am not pushing for anyone. On the contrary, I would like some one to give me a clue who they think and why.

Finally, you have my utmost respect in journeying to 20 aways - dedication par excellence!
