Been looking on the net for Contents Insurance.

Does anyone know where the cheapest can be found?

Watch the small print if you wish to make a claim in the first six months.

I took my first contents insurance out at 4 pm the night before the big storm in 1987 and made my first claim immediately the following morning, but they would only pay half!

I am concerned slightly when I read the claim small print.

They keep going on about having original receipts for everything, but what about stuff that you have bought years ago, or just haven't got any paperwork?

I realise that's why lost adjusters exist, but I still have my doubts. If, say for instance my TV etc was nicked, which I bought a few years ago and I doubt if I still have the receipts.

Would I have to prove that I had a certain TV worth a certain amount?

You have to prove you have had the item in the first place. It seems a common occurence that people claim for something they never actually had,.

An instruction manual would suffice if you haven't got a receipt.

We did that when our garage roof was ripped off. To claim for a push bike that was in there, we had the original leaflet to go with it when the receipt was lost.

I keep all receipts in a file now

Do photographs suffice as evidence of possession?

Except that my digital camera has broken and I was not insured?

If you make claims the premiums go up through the roof. They are willing to take you money, but they are not so keen on paying it out.

Premiums would be lower if burglary and fire victims didn't claim for these 'extras'

We have to pay for their dishonesty.

Norwich Union have been superb for me over the years. Just a word of warning, do not think the cheapest is the best. Everyone pays into a pot of money and claims are paid from that pot. It stands to reason if the pot of money is less the insurance company will be far stricter and more rigorous on paying out claims.

It also makes a difference if you get an ordinary policy or a new for old policy.

Allowances are made for depreciation and wear & tear.

I use Direct Line who I found to be the cheapest. The receipts bit is a newish idea and it's one way of insurance companies gaurding against fraudulent claims. However, it's also a way of insurance companies weaseling out of paying claims based of the premise that most people don't hang on to receipts. One that happend to Mrs BHA (we were burgled in Georgia) was being able to prove ownership by virture of either having the manuals for devices ot photos of them (watches and the like). I have to say that thanks to the generousity of that company we actually ended up better off !

That's why I mentioned the new for old policy.

I was burgled a few years ago. The main items that were taken were tv, video and microwave. I wrote down the value of them in my claim which was a new for old policy and the items I bought were superior because prices were coming down on those sorts of goods.

Now, my company look at the receipts, manuals etc and replace the items for you. Same brand and as near to the original specification as possible. This keeps their overheads down.
