Isn't it partially an aspirational thing that people used to do in the 80s to prove they'd "made it"?

A bit like mini bars in the lounge, cabinets to show off all your crystal glasses or a huge mahogany dining table to use only at Christmas.

This is particularly interesting, given that you're an estate agent. In your experience, do they add value to a house? I've heard they don't, but hastings has heard the opposite.

One of the big considerations that people don't always take into account is the loss of light to the room the conservatory adjoins. Not in all cases, but sometimes the room that is left behind becomes very dark with little outlook. Not always the case of course.

Our house has a conservatory and it has been pretty useless. When we bought the house, it had a load of blinds, but we had to rip them down and throw them away because they couldn't be cleaned and just ended up collecting the dead bodies of insects. Most of the time, the conservatory is either too hot or too cold. It does however offer a good storage place for bits and pieces. This summer we found a use for it when we bought two large vegetable growing trugs and used the room as a greenhouse - I've never had so many tomatoes or aubergines. So it can have its uses, although it's not really worked for me as a liveable space.

We had one built 2 years ago and love it. Sit in it all year round especially spring and autumn and we heat it in the winter and open the doors and windows in the summer.

Modern ones are very heat efficient and most have treble glazing. Cleaning not a problem as I send the wife up the ladder while I steady the bottom tread while I read NSC.

I'm siding with you on this one. If I was to buy a house with a conservatory I would have to factor in the expense of immediately knocking it down. Dreadful things.

They're heat efficient compared to old ones, but even Pilkington's EnergyKare triple glazed argon filled K glass units still only perform as well as a 1970's clear masonry cavity wall. That is good for glass, but still a poor insulator and not heat efficient - just more heat efficient than other types of glazing.

It depends on the property. If it's a fantastic big house, worth a lot of money, then I'd think it's seen as a negative - something that needs to be knocked down and replaced with a nicer sun room. If it's a 1 bed flat, with a reasonable garden, then the extra living space should add value.

2 adjacent 1930's semi's, both identical in terms of spec and layout, both for sale at the same time one has a conservatory one doesn't, the one with will sell first, once that is off market and not available to view the one without will sell probably for the same money. , so no.

That's actually a pic of our conservatory before we bought the place, so sadly the chairs went with the owners. I'm ashamed to say I took the mini bar out too.

Just saw Big Gully make a flippant comment about conservatories on the queen thread, and it got me thinking...

Who on earth has a conservatory fitted these days? They are shite. They cost a lot of money to install, they eat up a lot of your garden (which admittedly isn't a problem if you have a big garden I guess), and they are feckin freezing in the winter and sweltering hot in the summer, thus only useable six months of the year. Then there's the glass cleaning and maintenance to think about too.

What a shìt idea.

Had mine done 2 years ago and it is fantastic, I sit out there more than indoors. It is big, 6x5 metres, but then my garden is 200ft long. Best thing I've had done to my house in the 15 years I've been here, and I've changed a lot. Love it.
