We take for granted how accessible our MPs are. The public being able to have a face to face meeting with their representative as an essential part of any functioning democracy. I hope this won’t change in light of this event.

Let’s hope we can cast aside whatever divisions we have and hope the gentleman pulls through,

Shit, first Jo Cox, now Amess both attacked at a constituency surgery. Are we going to have to have security details for all MPs now? State of this world.

We don't know if this is political in nature, but Cox's attack was. Its what happens when people get so fervently on one side or the other of politics that it becomes tribal, it becomes something we personally try and defend. I know I have been guilty of this at times. You and I will keep it to words and rhetoric, but others pick up on our language and passion and defend our 'cause' with violence.

That's an interesting point. I don't think they do, his record is similar to Dim Tim my MP . . . . not things he shouts about really, his MP work and voting tow the party line and his/their interests, and his local persona and 'chariddee' work are somewhat different.

It does if he had it in his pre election blurb, he has also represented Southend for many years so surely his constituents knew what his thoughts are on those matters.
Either way you don't deserve to get stabbed because of it you just don't vote for him.
After Jo Cox, it seems silly and reckless to allow people to just walk in to his surgery, I am not saying that they should have security guards and metal detectors but surely have a locked door and allow appointments in only.
I have only said this because the report I have read said the attacker just barged in, if not true then apologies will be dished out.
I went to see my MP once, made an appointment but just walked in where there was a secretary, then walked through another door, after giving my name, where he was sat in a room.
