Can anyone here provide any defensive stats for Gallagher? I’ve just seen that he’s averaging nearly 7.5/10 this season which for a crap team is quite impressive. He’s definitely got physicality to his game. Disregarding the potential fee, would you feel more confident with CG in midfield or Dahoud? Different players I know, but likely deployed in the same position, a conundrum.

It's hard to disregard the fee when one was a free transfer and the other could be £40m.

we are sorely lacking in midfield. lots of our midfielders do not seem to be able to maintain that hunger and drive for the full 90 mins, and sometimes they don’t show it at all.

what we really do need, which perhaps isn’t gallagher, is midfielders who are strong, aggressive and nimble enough on the ball with their back to the opposition, or in half a yard of space, that they are able to turn into that space behind them quickly, take out the player(s) marking them and transform our possession into a fast break. that was our secret sauce with caicedo and ali mac. our build up play seems to be much more horizontal that vertical these days, as even when teams do fall for the bait, it is so easy to bump gilmour and dahoud off the ball, as they are so physically unimposing, and baleba is still very raw and not technically secure enough yet.

we don’t go toe-to-to with opposition pressers/bruisers in midfield anymore, as we can’t, and that ends up in a lot of lower risk, sideways and backwards passing, to look for that attack facing player that isn’t there, or to try and open up space on the flanks, which in turn is hindered by the fact that we don’t have any pacy/powerful fullbacks to drive into space and help get the ball from a to b in those little combinations we saw so much last season. that’s why our forward line has looked so isolated at times this season.

I think Mac and Caicedo always backed themselves to be able to turn a man if they got too tight to them, even near our own penalty box. Beleba and to a lesser extent Gilmour don't have either the ability, confidence or the instructions from RdZ to do that, hence why Beleba has done so many pass backs to keeper or centre half when he has played.
I think Gross can do it, but has rarely been played central recently.
It is an aspect missing from our game, compared to last season.

Rather than spend £40 million on Conor Gallagher, I would have a look at Shakhtar’s No. 10, Heorhiy Sudakov. Based on the clip below he would have no problems in adapting to the Brighton style of play. The best compliment I can give is that his style of play reminds me of Mac Allister.

i think baleba will get there eventually, showed it against liverpool and bournemouth (i think?), but he’s a bit loose with it right now. i think gilmour is just too weak physically to hold off any challengers, and may benefit from playing more between the lines than with them in front of him.

i accept these instructions are part of our ‘new way’ of playing without caicedo and mac allister, however right now for me there are too many unanswered questions, such as lack of defensive presence in midfield, lack of ball carrying ability, and lack of dynamic fullbacks to compensate for when the midfield can’t break through centrally. the answers to these may partially be in-house, however i suspect some of the answers will be found in the transfer market.

having said all that, we’re still 8th, so can’t be doing too badly, i just think we’re a couple of pieces away from doing a whole lot better. teams like villa just look so much more aggressive and direct than us right now, like we were last season

He's someone I could see going to West Ham, Fulham (with the Palhinha money when he goes) or Newcastle rather than us.

Aside from the wages & probable lack of profit on an eventual sale, as others have already said, he doesn't seem to have the finesse/brains to fit in. He needs to have his head up thinking about where to pass before he receives or wins the ball, rather than head down, launching into tackles.

As much as we need more energy and steel in midfield, buying that in without the technical ability and (more importantly), footballing brain, just won't work IMO.

Forgetting wages/likelihood of coming to us for a second, I'd much prefer Kalvin Phillips
