Hello good people of NSC,

My computer needs a bit of repair, over time 5 keys have come off the keyboard on my Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop. Could anyone advise me as to how much this would cost to repair?

Surely an easy job so not too much? Thank you!

I, O, P, S, D have come off, yes. I kept trying to put them back on but they'd come off after a few taps.

I have 2, I think, but the others have gone missing. They MUST be around the house though. If i couldn't find them, would they be a cheap job at the repairs?

My sister had a Dell laptop with keys that fell off, I think she used ebay or the amazon marketplace to buy a reaplacement keyboard for about £15. It was a fairly painless refit and looks like the original.

Thanks for the recomendation, just looked on ebay and theyre floating around for about £12. Is it as simple as chipping all the keys off or is there screwdriver work to be done? I'm looking around my keyboard and it seems strangely difficult!?

My P fell off and I glued it back on. Bit of a arse as sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I try and avoid using words with a 'p' in them which is a good vocabulary exercise.

My other netbook suffered from a wine sPillage. About 7 or 8 keys no longer work. Any way to fix that? It will be a perfectly good netbook, if they are fixed.

@Jordan, i've taken the keys off of my EEEPC (netbook) several times and put them back on. Should just be a case of press down and align until the click in to place.

@BoF, possibly but it might be pricy.

Indeed, that's what i tried over and over again. No problem in actually getting them back on (as you say they just click into place) but they end up falling back off again after a few minutes. I know, it sounds as though I am retarded, but after 5 years they are well and truly knackered!

Hmmm...ok then. Possibly that either the clippy bit on the laptop its self or the clippy bit on the key is busted... i'd take a look at taking another key off and seeing if you can put it on the missing keys space (So take F off and put it where P or O should be) and see if it works. If it does then its the keys them selves, if it doesn't it may be the lappy. which is more difficulte/painstaking to fix.

And if you can't do that you could just plug in an external keyboard.
