Danny Murphy is different class compared to Smith and Mcmanaman. Really like him, does his research and is always fair.

I really like Danny Murphy too, both on live co-comms, and with his punditry on MOTD and on Talkshite. He always stands out to me with his measured, succinct, thoughtful analysis. I've seen him referred to as boring on here, but I disagree. He never falls back on hyperbole, avoids the tired old cliche's, and offers genuine insight beyond the bland and obvious.

Strikes me he'd be a VERY good manager if he fancied it, but I guess he's raking it in on the punditry side, so I don't blame him avoiding the pressure and taking the easy buck in the studio.

It's the hyperbole on Sky that winds me up. Every single goal, save, interception or tackle is "out of this world", "unbelievable" etc

Murphy actually seems interested in and knowedgable about every side he’s talking about either in co-comms or on MOTD whereas for the likes of Smith,
Mcmanaman, Hoddle etc, we’re an after-thought.

Most of my football is consumed via 5 Live as I don’t have SKY or BT.

I’ve grown to really like Clinton Morrrison, for his sheer enthusiasm about all things football, a great sense of humour, a nice touch of self-deprication, good insight into what players are probably thinking and balanced judgement. I think he’s been a refreshing addition to to the usual renta-quotes; a distinctive and refreshing voice.

And I couldn’t stand him when he first started.

Of the overall Sky team, Jamie Redknapp gets on my nerves ..... doesn’t let others speak and he always with a barely veiled bias to Spuds. The same with Jenas on BT.

Roy Keane doesn’t spend time researching the likes of the Albion and our players. But he’s great value as the po-faced assasin.

Been watching the rugby this weekend as well and the BBC commentary is way better.

Just sticks to the commentary, doesn't try to create hype or generate excitement artificially.

I've never mentioned it, but he's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I like his slightly wry analysis, I like the way he dresses, and I like the way he talks. He comes across as a top bloke.

The Sky commentary in our recent fixtures has been so poor, generally the analysis of experts such as Alan Smith has been ill thought or bias.

What a refreshing change the BBC commentary pair are today. A lot more research and a lot less bias.

If Danny Murphy had slated us yesterday this thread would have been completely different.

Agreed though he is better than some of the dross Sky and BT have. However thought the BBC's coverage was pretty average compared to both BT and Sky but then I guess they don't have the budgets both Sky and BT do. They clearly didn't have the rights to the pen pictures as they were all photoshopped heads on the same body and their stab at the fake crowd noise was just rubbish.

I'm not 100% certain but the man commentating on the BBC TV yesterday sounded like the commentator Radio 5 Live used for our game vs. Palace recently. During that game he demonstrated a real depth of knowledge about the Albion, before admitting that he married into "a Brighton supporting family."

Its actually quite simple. BBC commentate on live sport. All the others have a discussion about anything apart from the match being played (haircuts, favourite food, why Liverpool are hard done by with injuries, and any other bull crap they can think of). BBC don't just have an inane discussion and occasionally shout the name of the player who kicked the ball 10 seconds previously.

Its almost like the BBC train their commentators on how to guide the viewer/listeners through the action, without patronising them, and relying on ludicrous meaningless stats to fill in the time . (Brighton have never won a premier league game on a Tuesday with a 7.30 start when the wind is in the east kind of thing

Having the BBC show live matches has really shown up how bad Sky and BT commentary and coverage really is.

My wife, who isn't really into football, has had to put up with a lot of televised football recently especially as we keep getting the bloody 8pm on a Saturday night slot.

The last few weeks she has been increasingly critical of the commentators on Sky/BT droning on about rubbish to the point where she suggested we turn the TV down and have music on instead whilst I watch.

She said yesterday how much better the BBC commentary was and that they were actually talking about what was happening, and also that the half time discussion with Mark Hughes was interesting...

It isn't just about the commentary though.

I am so frustrated with the Directors cut and SKy are the WORST offenders. Okay if there is really nothing else going on, give us a close up of the bloke who didn't make the squad sitting in the stand looking glum, or the facial expressions of the bloke who just hoofed one into Row Z from 5 yards out, but when the ball is in play I want to watch the sodding football you morons.

When watching Sky I wait until the ref blows the whistle to start the game and immediately pause the picture and turn the TV volume down.
Then I listen to Radio 5 Live commentary on my laptop which is usually about 30 seconds behind.
I unpause the picture the moment I hear the ref blow the whistle to start the game. The TV picture and radio commentary are then nicely synced

It works a treat and you get the updates from other events during the match whilst still watching our game.

Mid action, Sky hype zzzzzz Super Sunday fixtures a week or more away. With screen banners, plus Martin Tyler being instructed to mention it in the commentary of totally unrelated games.

“Join us next Sunday with what promises to another titanic battle between ManU and Arsenal. Can Solskjaer turn up the heat on their Manchester rivals yet further, or will Arteta sink a dagger into their title hopes”.

So much better than the dick on Sky (or is it BT?) who intersperses his commentary with tooth-pullingly excruciating 'facts' and inane platitudes.

'A good cross from Brighton. That's the 167th successful pass Brighton have made in a first half since the start of the restrictions that have sadly kept the fans out of the stadiums. And we all just want things to return to normal. Once again the pass has come to nothing. That's the 127th time a pass from Brighton has come to nothing in the first or second half since the last time they scored more than two goals from open play in a premier league game. And that was against next week's opponents Newcastle. And that's a record they could happily do without. I think they are sorely missing Adam Lallana, athough he recently scored his first goals since November 2019'

On the subject of commentators, for those that ever listen to football commentaries on 5 Live, that Geordie bloke John Murray really pisses me off.

He commentates like he's never seen football match before and goes to Defcom 4 everytime the ball goes anywhere near the penalty box - and if anyone actually looks like they are about to take a shot he completely pisses his pants.

"Mane to Salah... back to Mane... MANE'S IN THE BOX! BACK TO SALAH... SALAH SHOOTS! Oh, it hits the corner flag. It remains... nil nil....decent game so far."

Even worse when they do that on a highlights programme. Here's a shot of player spitting (did somebody mention that Covid is a virus spread by personal body fluid contact). And another of the back of the manager's head. And one of a steward watching the match that you can't see at the moment. Just carry on paying the licence, suckers, and don't complain.

Of course we won't fail to broadcast another childish goal celebration in real time and slo-mo close up, for your enjoyment and to set the scene.

All carried by a pundit who is a football expert but hasn't learnt rudimentary English, despite it being his first language.
