Have a look at this scoreboard at the Schoonenberg Stadion in Holland, home to Telstar FC. Everytime a goal is scored they hoist up a white basket. This picture was taken after their 4-1 home win over Go Ahead Eagles yesterday:

I've always wondered about the point of scoreboards. I've been pretty pissed at some games but don't think I've ever been that bad that I needed to be reminded of the score!

Yes, an audience, defined as:

a gathering of spectators or listeners at a (usually public) performance; "the audience applauded"; "someone in the audience began to cough"

What would you call it?

???

Oooh a nice semantic argument for a Monday afternoon. Is it because an audience listens but spectators watch?

You arrive late, hear a roar on the way in, have no idea who scored and - most importantly - have lost the ability to speak to ask someone else...

and at such stadia you have announcers who are SOOO in love with the sound of their own voice that they have to shout the score at half time and at the end. To the people in the ground who have just watched the game. And who have a scoreboard to remind them of the score. I though it was just Americans who were that thick that they needed reminding...

I think the Americans need reminding because their stupid 'sports' are so complicated nobody really knows when anyone scores.

In a vaguely related story, away at Barnsley on the first day of the season a few years back, Gary Nelson scored to put us 1 nil up. Someone turned round to my mate who didn't like football but had only come along for the ride and asked him who scored. After checking a few times they weren't taking the piss he eventually let them know it was Brighton who had scored.
