It's Bert Murray with the ball.

Who is it in the background?

Any guesses about who the opposition are?

Thanks.

By the seaside in West Somerset
Plymouth I think

I modelled my sliding tackle on Stewart Henderson - took the player out more often than (or as well as) the ball

Coventry? Had a look on net and the only green and black shirt I could find was this one.

Coventry 1970s away shirt

And the full kit looks to be a perfect match looking at this photo

Definately Gall and Henderson.
For some reason I can't explain, i am thinking Bournemouth?

I was thinking along those lines, but then realised I had this photo...

The Bournemouth picture is definitely from the home game as we had changed to blue shorts and socks by the time of the return fixture.

Bournemouth did have a green and black away kit that season, as shown in this Aston Villa video (which also has the Villa v Brighton game from Sept 1971):

Hahaha.

I've just had a look at the Supporters' Club Handbook for that season and found that Plymouth had green and black stripes as a change strip, so yes, it could be them....

Thank you.

We played Plymouth Argyle in the February, yet some of the crowd are in short sleeves, it probably is Coventry City.

I think Plymouth.
As for the 2nd pic, I think it's Kit napier with his back to us and Kenny Beamish is the player facing.

He was a 'big money' (£35,000) signing from Tranmere, where he was a regular scorer especially against us. A bustling forward with a cracking shot, big favourite in a very short Albion career then moved on to Blackburn & did well.

Beamish also played against us for Port Vale in the 76/77 season

In Mark Lawrenson's autobiography, he mentions that Ken Beamish, then with Tranmere, did a high tackle on him in a League Cup tie in 1980/81 to wind him up and this led to Lawrenson being sent off later on in the second half.

Based on a price of 50p per game, converting to just under £6 now (I know prices have doubled in real terms at least), I reckon £13.50

Alex Sheridan in the middle?

You may have someting there with Sheridan (and Coventry). Somehow not quite convinced it was Senderson. Alex Sheridan was one of sawards 1st signings the previous season. He didn't quite work out but could well have featured in a pre-season friendly.
