The version I knew went something like this:
Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly
"Have you heard of The North Bank Highbury?"
Shanks said "No, I dont think so,
But I've heard of The Brighton North Stand, "

I think the original version was sung by Citeh, according to my Man City supporting mate in the late 70's who sang it regularly after a few beers

Said Bertie Mee to Joe Harvey
Have you heard of the North Bank Highbury?
No, said Joe, I don't think so
But I've heard of the Kippax, Maine Road.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I thought it was "Don Revie said to Bill Shankly etc etc."
At the end of the song, during the la-las, you pushed the person in front of you, and took their place, causing the cascade/domino effect before walking backwards to where you originally stood after the tide had gone back out.

Scousers 70s version also had a rhyming last line that referred to “the Annie Road agro”...

My Geordie pal sung this regularly at Uni after about 6 pints:

Bertie Mee said to Joe Harvey
'"Have you heard of the North Bank Highbury?'"
'"No'" said Joe, '"I don't think so.'"
“ Have you heard of the Leazes’ aggro!!!'"

Given Joe Harvey’s background as Newcastle Utd Manager (rather than when he played at Potter’s favourite position of ‘half back’ for the Geordies) I suspect it might be originally from the North East?

The Burnley version (still sung) is

Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly
Have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury
Shanks said no, I don't think so,
But I've heard of the Longside, Burnley.

Which at least rhymes which is a point in favour of being the original.

Of course, some of our newer singers think it is Bertie Bee doing the asking. Never haviong heard of Bertie Mee. Amateurs.

There's a qu**r that plays for Arsenal his name is Alan Ball but as for Ted McDougal he's the qu**rest of them all , you've never seen anything like it in present or in past , there's nothing he likes better than a c**k stuck up his arse .

It doesn't rhyme though. Shankly rhymes with Highbury. Line 4 should rhyme with "so"

This far down page 2 and still no mention of Bill Skankly? Maybe in relation to Croydon? NSC is slipping.

The rhymes are:

MEE - ShankLEY
HighbuRY - BurnLEY
NO - SO

AA
B
CC
B

Compare this classic:

Twas an evening in November as I very well remember,
I was strolling down the street with drunken pride.
But my feet began to stutter and I lay down in the gutter
And a pig came up and lay down by my side.

Yes, I lay there in the gutter, thinking thoughts I could not utter
And a colleen passing by was heard to say,
"You can tell a man that boozes by the company he chooses."
At that the pig got up and walked away.

:)
