A further thought.

When news of Potter's possible departure started to gain substance, besides not wishing him to go, I also thought he'd done 3+ years and we could ask no more of him.

I was wrong. We could in fact have asked/expected more - specifically that he didn't rip out the heart of the coaching department when he left. And yet he did.

This carefully worded analysis sums it up for me...

Here's an extract...

'You can’t blame Graham Potter for joining Chelsea, any more than you could blame Marc Cucurella for going in the summer, or Yves Bissouma for joining Tottenham. There is a clear ladder and if you want to win trophies you have to climb it; just as Potter climbed the ladder by leaving Swansea for Brighton. But it is depressing when the moral of the story is that no matter how smart you are, football is a world in which money will always trump cleverness.'

Yes. I retweeted that article yesterday. Sums it up nicely and makes it even more depressing.

We were just about to be the best we could realistically ever hope for and he buggered off, doesn't care a jot. I hope he has a miserable time with that American, good riddance.

Yep, good article. Jonathan Wilson has been banging this drum for years - the top clubs have so much more money than everyone else that the game is totally distorted.

Read that yesterday and it's bang on.

I wouldn't be surprised if we had the whole coaching staff from USG transfer over here. TB and PB are unlikely to pay out silly money for a coaching staff team.

I am less bitter at Potter, still a bit, but essentially he has been offered one of the top 3 jobs in English Football, and doesn't need to change his close colleagues or move home to take it.

What I am really pissed off about is that our, or anyone outside the big 6, half a chance of nicking a European spot is only there when some of those clubs make shit appointments for sentimental reasons or because the fans like it. Appointments like Frank Lampard to Chelsea, OGS to Man Utd. If those clubs all start making sensible long term appointments, with people behind the scenes working properly on recruitment, managers that don't pander to fans or dickhead owners on team selection etc. None of us have even that half chance of anything anymore.
I hope it takes Potter longer than Teds patience will last to show his worth, because once he is in there and working to his potential, I would not bet against Chelsea being the team winning all the trophies for the next 20 years.
As for Bruno leaving, it was kind of within Potters gift that he had a senior coaching role at the club in the first place, I am sad but it makes sense for him to go too, Roberts has given us many years and is very highly respected, and is really the only one that we can say was pinched by Potter, but he could hardly leave him behind, they all went because they wanted to. Again the real pisser for me is that it increases the chances of it all working out at Chelsea with Potter, decreases the already long odds of someone outside the top 6 ever winning anything ever again.

We will have a new management team in place soon, and let’s remember that unlike last time, we are at the top end of the league. There will not only be managers we have kept tabs on, the phone will be ringing.

Ok. I feel let down and disappointed by the events of yesterday. Bruno going was the emotional punch to the stomach.

But, I feel supreme confidence in Tony Bloom and Paul Barber. They will be ready for this and all the evidence suggests that their plans to replace are in place and rolling. Reading PB’s comments on the club website reinforce that belief.

As to GP and his team. I wish them well. I just wish it was at a club where I did not mind him succeeding. Hopefully he will be England manager soon.

We will get through this transition. The project continues.

Unfortunately they admitted to sounding out Potter during the Cucurella transfer even asking him if he felt comfortable stepping up to a top six club.

I would be surprised if Potter was involved in discussions with external parties on outgoings based on his role?

"But it is depressing when the moral of the story is that no matter how smart you are, football is a world in which money will always trump cleverness" (for credit see post above).

This can only mean that Chelsea's money has trumped Bloom's cleverness. Well Bloom remains clever so he can recruit well again.

The truth of the matter is that money has been trumped by more money.

I find it very hard to work up any outrage about this. With the best will in the world, I can't see the global football industry going communist any time soon.

I'm happy for Brighton to stay clever. After all, it has got us to the top 4.

(And here's the thing. I do not wish Potter any ill. I have made that clear. So when I say that I fear for him at Chelsea, and have a suspicion it will turn out badly, this is not motivated by malice, envy or bitterness. In the cold light of day, he will face skepticism from the Chelsea support. He does not have a squad of players carefully hand picked for their attitude as well as their talent. How many Andones and Connollys (from an attitude perspective) lurk in the Chelsea squad?

And then there is the man. With the best will in the word, the teeth sucking and the west midlands accent, and the treating victory and defeat as equal imposters..... I don't know, I really don't. I can say all that because I still love the man and what he's done at Brighton and have no grudge about his leaving. But in the long term we may look back and see we have been through a transition that took us upwards to a new level, that was taken forward with our subsequent manager, whereas Chelsea.....we shall see ???)

I hear their new number 9 is a bit of maverick, maybe one for Billy Reid to iron out early

Now hear speaks the voice of wisdom with a calm pragmatic outlook on the departure.
I know in my heart and head, this is how I should look and feel about everything, but I am weak and still in shock..

Give me time :(

The truth is this act of the play is only half done. We'll know the damage (or not) once the new team is on board. I've lost all respect for Potter but I can understand why he took it. Hopefully we've not burned bridges with Bruno. I've a sneaking suspicion he's merely carrying on an apprenticeship. Once he has more experience and all his badges he might be ready to be our Arteta if the new coaching team are struggling.

I look forward to a new chapter in our club's history. The new manager will inherit the best team that we have ever had and I hope they can continue the progress made under Potter. I'm looking forward to a pissed off Bloom proving yet again why he is the best owner league and refusing to be bowed by the vulgar power of the "Big Six".

As for Potter, well I do hope he fails, I feel betrayed (I know that is hyperbolic nonsense but welcome to being a football fan, hyperbolic nonsense is what we do!) Let him scuttle off to West London where he takes on the huge challenge of keeping a rich and successful team err.... rich and successful.

Falmer, soon...
I think Potter will be a success if given time.
The big concern I have for us is the focus both on the individual (in terms of improvement) and the synergy of the group. He has raised the bar in both aspects and there is a significant risk of underdoing all the good work so far with the wrong appointment. Conversely after 4 years, perhaps a fresh perspective and the right coaching setup can build on the work that has already been done.

Recruitment is key. The data analysis, scouting, medical teams are all the same. The information at the coaches disposal won't differ. It comes down to getting the right personalities and the head coach who has the tactical acumen and leadership to continue the journey.

No egos or empires please.

We were always going to lose Potter sooner rather than later.

Would far rather we lost him when fourth in the table and a third of the way towards PL safety than at the other end of the table which we have been for most of our tenure in the Premier League.

Am still stunned at what Potter has achieved on a fraction of the budget that other clubs have and playing fantastic football most of the time.

Having said that it’s highly unlikely that Potter could achieve much more than another mid table season unless TB really did go for broke and splash the cash. We started well last season but had a pretty torrid time for long spells.

I know it’s in most fans DNA to reach for the stars after a few good results but……

Given the average length of time that most Premier League managers last then we’ve actually done pretty well and, given the way most owners behave (TB being an honourable exception), you can understand why Potter couldn’t turn down an offer from Chelsea to secure his family’s future.

Don’t know what he’s getting there but it’s probably double or triple his Brighton wages!
