Awesome news. Been around for a few years but didn't ever think he was one of the top performers. More solid squad player in the relevant age group. Glad to find out he's kicked on. Maybe a decent loan after Xmas?

He was deemed good enough to play for England U-16s back in 2015.

Given, Bernardo's continuing injury, Bong, not being a Potter type player, our defensive injuries and suspensions and Potters willingness to promote from the u23s, I think there's an outside chance of him being in the first team squad against Leicester.

We've also got a very promising young LB who looked close to 1st. team ready last season, George Cox, now on loan to Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie. Don't know how he's getting on there, or whether we can recall, etc, etc.
I'm fairly sure I remember reading somewhere, though, that the club regarded Cochrane as an even better prospect.

Cox is playing week in week out i believe Sittard have an option to buy in the summer. Sittard are hovering near the bottom of the league, so maybe it’s a little difficult to judge his quality in this case compared to the standard we would need.

Cochrane is very promising, though who is or was the better prospect is all somewhat hearsay. I have my doubts that Cochrane is ready for the PL based on nothing more than watching U23 matches when possible but a loan out to a football league club seems a likely next step.

I hope we don't sell him, he's always looked impressive when I've seen the U23s

Given that we don't have any fit specialist full backs and GP likes to be able to switch formations fluidly and was hired on the ack of his reputation for bringing young players through, you'd have thought Cochrane isn't far off a starting place here.

If not then maybe sale is for the best

Only a 1 year deal suggests to me that we'll be looking for a fee in the summer.

Andy Naylor suggesting a loan is likely. Feel like he's got unfinished business at USG where he was popular and will now being playing a higher standard following promotion this year to the top flight.

Could also have an option in there again.

Cochrane is an absolute liability on my current game of FM, but it's my own stupid fault for not reinforcing at LB properly.

Well that settles it. Ship him to Ouagadoogoo FC for a 15 year loan spell

Albion had an option anyway, so if they were planning on selling him this summer they would only have needed to action that.

Isn't that what we've done? I didn't read this as a whole new contract for 1 season, rather taking up the option of a further 12 months. Surely a new contract would have been 2 years at least?

A club option is precisely that - a one-sided option that the club can activate unilaterally. It wouldn't need the active signature of the player.

The announcement today specifically states that Cochrane has "..signed a new contract with the club through until June 2022." That, to me, means a new one-year deal has been signed (probably with another club one-year option at the end, as that is what seems to be the default these days for younger players).
