We might as well offload CMS if we're not going to play him alongside another striker. He cannot play upfront on his own.

Jeez! He's not even kicked a ball in anger season 2014/15. Give the bloke a break. CMS has only just come back from a major injury. Let's see how the month of August pans out before we start laying the boot in. He always scores against Leeds for starters.

He's had 3 years worth of chances already, or 3/4 of his lucrative contract. If you disregard injuries, he's still been worth a fraction of the ridiculous fee paid for a League One striker.

The pointless running about all over the place to little effect in the 2nd half v Southampton didn't exactly install confidence that his game had changed in any way tho eh?

I do love it when people dress this up as being a handful for defenders, something for them to concentrate on. Any half decent defender simply switches from man marking to zonal in these situations.

Might want to re-examine your post/requote matey. Was in now way dressing CMS up as a handful for defenders. Quite the opposite in fact..

There were a couple of longer balls pinged to him last night, one of which he controlled very well indeed before being forced out by the Saints defender.

He wants to get behind defenders and have stuff to run onto. Give him that and he'll thrive.

For 3.5m I'd expect more than just a player who will only "thrive" from precisely delivered through balls. League 1 fine to open up dodgy defences, not in the championship......

Hopefully Smithie will have an injury free season and a midfield that will put some quick through balls to reward him for his constant movement off the ball.

Sleeping on the roof
FAR better reading of the game
Better hold up player
Better finisher
Better at linking up/passing
Better at heading

Admittedly he's not as good at running around at 300mph with the ball whacking off his shins.

Love CMS for lots of reasons.
But in terms of value. He paid back a lot of his fee simply for the joy that every one of us felt after his role in this...

Not read the whole thread but IMO Gus ruined him. I've said it a million times before but you don't spend a club record fee to play that player out of position. Not CMS's fault.

If he stays fit, CMS will get 18 goals + this season. If anyone else in the squad matches that, we will be top six easy. How is that a waste of money???. He has scored three or four goals in the stripes so far, that Ashley Barnes and even Leo could only dream of. Against Leeds and Burnley spring to mind, they had class written all over them. You can't fluke goals like that. CMS has got it, he just needs to be played in the right system.
