many a good night in there, early 80s mind

nowhere near as moody as coasters

I loved Coasters, no dress code and cheap entry unlike the Suite etc, closed at 1 rather than 2, but that was 80s.
Trek was somewhere to go when the pubs closed, free entry and definitely no dress code, this was later on in my life when I moved out of Brighton. I got to know lots of people from Seaford and had a brilliant time.

Met my Mrs in the Trek

I know it got closed for having a fair bit of trouble

but it really wasn't like that in the 80s

Coasters was my favourite all time club, partly due to the amazing music. Used to visit up to 4 times a week when in my teens.

Steered clear of fights, but scummy West Street cowards (on NSC any of them?) were present I believe.

The Trek closed after I stopped going there when I moved to Newhaven, probably didn't have any trouble there myself as I knew so many people and got on well with the doormen.

I went to Tideway School so wasn’t a Brightonian, but other than a brief few trips to Peacehaven and Newhaven pubs when I was 16 / 17, I fell for Brighton’s nightlife straight away. Clubs open to the early hours, loads of choice, dancing, always a new crowd in town.

We made a few trips, for something different to do, to Eastbourne’s Roxy and another smallish club in the Old Town (South Street).

Older mates in the 70’s had loved The Kings Club, Eastbourne where they were wooed by Scandies.

Brighton area was my mainstay in the 90s. Shark Club first and then a member at The Zap club on Friday nights. We'd occasionally venture to either Sterns or Club UK in Wandsworth but my favourite trip away was to the successor to Club UK called Voyager at a club called the Complex in Angel, London.

Four floors - downtempo / trip hop at the bottom, two floors of techno and a bar at the top with pool tables and Playstations. The middle two floors had sweat flying off the walls from about midnight on and looking back on it, the stairs between the rooms were very likely a major fire risk. Saw Sven Vath, Jeff Mills and David Holmes in particular absolutely rip the place up. Very, very nearly got locked in the loos for a whole day as the lights went out in the gents as I was having my end of the night piss.

On a recent lads trip to Slovenia I thought I recognised a friend of a friend but couldn't place him and he swore he'd not met me. It turns out that the first time we went up there our driver got lost in London on the way home and we got pulled over. 7am and everyone in the car with a can of lager except the driver. You'd never get away with it these days but we managed to talk our way out of it when two tramps started a violent fight ten yards away. We both told exactly the same tale in the bar after our days' Slovenian adrenaline sport - he'd been in the back of the car and I was in the front seat.

Similar back catalogue! Loved the Shark, but was an Escape Club regular Vs Zap, pretty regular on Fridays and almost every Saturday. Marcus Sanderson, mad Albion fan Paul Clark were residents. 1994 was the Halycon days for me. Escape Club followed by various mates house after parties. And of course Ovingdean, Shoreham power station or the old Sainsbury's on London Road when they were on :)
Club UK.... what a place, seeing the nightcrawlers live in that room with the fluro dice (loved that room). The Leisure Lounge in Holborn was pretty good in 94/95. Twas a great time to be young!

I’m older than you, I was late 20’s then and still very much clubbing.

I went to a lovely central Glasgow nightclub a few times then, Push The Feeling On a favourite.

Kraftwerk aside, largely being into rock, then indie, in my younger days electronic music largely passed me by. But via the Chemical Brothers and Fat Boy it started to take hold and electronic, and dance, has played a big part in my life ever since. I lived in London for many years and I used to go to The Cross most for Seb Fontaine’s Type night. Wasn’t a fan of him but the second room always had good stuff on. The End also figured significantly. Turnmills and was a member at Fabric for many years although I didn’t go as much as I should have; the membership was mainly to get their excellent mix CDs.

I also got into the Hoxton scene quite early and went to places like Mother Bar, 333 93 Feet East and Cargo. There was always something going on. Remember a Wetherall night and becoming a fan-boy of David Holmes. Saw Holmes play some incredible sets, but he was sometimes a frustrating character who seemed more intent on testing our patience.

I also went to lots of things which I can barely remember like a rave at Brockwell Lido and a club which had a swimming pool in it...possibly Old Street area. And DJ Harvey at Pikes in Ibiza. And I went to the Winter Music Conference in Miami about 20 years ago. This was, possibly still is, a gathering of the great and good of dance music. Went to some brilliant club nights but this also introduced me to the concept of pool parties...quite an eye opener and visually like being on the set of a rap video.

I then found myself living in Berlin which has peaked and troughed a few times but still has a ridiculously strong techno scene covering all styles and crowds from big clubs to ramshackle semi-derelict places and many open-airs in the summer. I’ve been to most of them and highlights are Berghain (best club, on every level, I have been to), Weekend which was on the top two floors and roof of a 20 story office block and the grimy Golden Gate are my favourites. I still always go to the annual Kompakt Records party at Else Brucke, and small open air venue where the River Spree and a railway bridge meet. I love Kompakt, a cracking label.

Man. Dress codes in crap clubs used to do my nut in.

Anyone allowed in if they had black trousers (£2 from Primark) and shiny shoes (£5 from TK Maxx). Likelihood of causing trouble, massive.

"Sorry mate you can't come in with jeans and trainers"

Combined cost £150, likelihood of causing trouble, zero.

I know sometimes I should read a comment I don't agree with and just let it pass, but really? Some of the biggest cocks I know are those that spend the most money on their threads, with their look at me attitude, and are equally if not more likely to start trouble...

Well yes, which is why discretion should be used by door staff.

If you're wearing a cock bonnet, a ridiculously tight pair of half mast Armani jeans with turn ups, those stupid slip ons with no socks and a skin tight, white Hugo Boss t-shirt then you are likely to be a trouble maker. And you're clearly a ****......

It's not about the money, I was merely pointing out the stupidity of the situation back in the day when the lagered up Townies would be allowed into places in droves to cause bother. Whereas the chilled out clubbers would be denied entry despite wearing decent clobber.

Great stuff! We had a US trip planned a while back that was going to take in The Winter Music Conference, New Orleans and South By Southwest (before it got massive).

Then Katrina wiped out New Orleans, Bush was a complete **** so we went to Mexico instead.

Still gutted that we didn't get to the WMC. Clubbing in Miami looks immense.

Did find a cracking gay club in Playa Del Carmen in Mexico though. Met a couple of Italian guys in a bar (who were camp as anything) who said "you HAVE to come to club 69!!!".

Up for anything, we went with them. Ended up getting a taxi back at about 5 a.m. My Mrs unintentionally pulled a girl too.....

Unintentionally you say :lolol: I love spontaneous nights like yours at Club 69.

SxSW is on my bucket list. I appreciate I may have missed the boat because, as you say, it’s now huge, but I really like what I read about Austin.

WMC was a brilliant trip. I went to Danny Tenglia’s club to see him play and also went to a small theatre turned club to see David Morales play a really tough disco set. A friend pushed me into going, as Morales wasn’t my thing, but it was great fun and very MACHO. We also blagged our way into Norman’s Southern Fried pool party....sadly he wasn’t playing as he cancelled due to, I presume, the marital problems he was having at the time.

My best recent weekend was Easter 2017. On Easter Friday we watched the Wolves game at my mates and then a few of us went to an Escape reunion that Clarkey helped put on with Brandon Block headlining. 2.30am was about the limit for this old man because I wanted to be fresh for Easter Monday and a certain game with Wigan. Loads of old faces in there from all the old Brighton clubs....

Plenty in Brighton when I lived there 96-98 - Event, Paradox, Gloucester, Basement, to name but 4.

Outside of Brighton, I'd have to list The Crypt in Hastings, as it would have been the club I visited the most back in the day. Some seriously decent bands played there when they were up and coming too.

One of favourite memories would be the night a band called 'Coldplay' played there and rather than watching them like all my mates were, I was at the bar having a drunken, but amicable enough argument with a stranger about football instead, so I didn't see them. Some things are more important.

What I wouldn't give right now to have a time machine to get me out of 2020 and go back 25 years....................

I did WMC once, but barely touched the surface. So much going on, Darius Syrossian had put me & the missus on guest-list for Space as we were on the same flight and to this day regret not going. Legendary club

I lived in London for a bit in the early 00s. My mate lived with the manager of ministry of sound so we thoroughly abused AAA there for a long time.

Egg was newly opened so spent a few day times there on the roof. Cargo a bit too. But for me someone took us to Public Life which was a game changer. Day time thing, an old public toilet converted into a small club. The minimal scene was at its peak and we couldn’t stay away.

I recently worked very close to it and walked past it every day reminiscing. Was now a falafel take away place I think.

Sadly my year in London finished after 9 months, I think I’d have carried on I’d be dead so moved back to Sussex
