--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the start of the 2007/08 season, Hammond had one-year remaining on his contact at the Withdean, manager Dean Wilkins was keen to offer Hammond a new deal, with the club and representitives for the player beginning talks in October 2007. During January 2008, it was revealed that Hammond stated that he would only sign a new deal for the club if they showed the ambition of returning to the Championship, Dick Knight truly responded with the £300,000 capture of striker Glenn Murray from Rochdale. Although this didn't persuade Dean that the club was moving forward and in the right direction, so therefore the club placed him on the transfer list with little more than a week of the transfer window remaining. On the 30th January, it was revealed that Brighton had accepted an offer of £250,000 plus add-ons for the player. Hammond completed the deal the following day, where it is believed that if Colchester are relegated, that he has a clause in his contract allowing the player to move on for an agreed transfer fee.

McFaul - forgot about him.

Surely Wilkins would have given Chamberlain a go if he was good enough.

And El-Abd? In midfield? Errrr, no ta!
El-Abd in midfield is not that bad, as a stopgap. At least he gives us a bit of bite, and far less likelihood of a calamity then in defence.

Great news that he's gone, just how he got the captains armband in the first place, just goes to show what a poor team we were.

I've never seen a captains head drop as i did when the second goal went in against Forest, he left it to Forster roll he's sleeves up and raise the team.

Sorry Hammond, your no Nobby Horton............piss off!

It's not particularly great that Hammond's gone but I guess we made the best of a bad situation by getting 250,000 for him. It's just a shame we couldn't have got another midfielder in to replace him.

As for Hammond choosingf Colchester. Well, it's a strange one isn't it? There's a very good chance that he's only going to have a maximum of 17games in the championship before finding himself back in league one. I'm not entirely sure why he would do that. They are a small club punching above their weight, and that will still be true when they move into their new(10,000capacity) stadium next year. Presumably he see's them as a stepping stone? I can't help but think he'd have been better served staying with us till the summer and then reassessing his options. Oh well, good luck to him.
