It was funny how the music changed overnight in clubs in Brighton in late 80s, one Friday I was shuffling my feet down The Savannah( now club revenge)to the sounds of PUBLIC ENEMY, RUN DMC, ERIC B & RAKIM and when I went down the club the following week it was all SMILEY faces painted on bed sheets hanging from the walls and everyone screaming AAAACCCCCCIIIDDDDDD AAAACCCCCIIIIIDDDDDD man (never heard Public enemy in a club again after that ) the whole music scene literally changed overnight

Was this you :rave::rave::banana:

Think I remember you...:rave::rave:

Why was it that the Zap and all the other seafront clubs could stay open til 5 in the morning? I heard something along the lines of the licensing laws didn't apply for some reason because of where they were. All clubs not on the seafront had to close at 2.

They stopped serving alcohol at 2. There was also some weird thing where (and I think it only happened for a short time) they had to serve food to stay open late. Eating wasnt high on peoples agendas for some reason.

They did a good line in disco biscuits.

D-mob will never understand how they changed the world...!

That D-Mob track wasn't the best. I once cleared the whole dancefloor at college by putting it on. My fave acid tracks would have to be Acid Trax by Phuture, This Is Acid by Maurice, Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald and Give It To Me (Double Trouble Extended Remix) by Bam Bam (great Scooby Doo intro!). Great music to go with strobes and poor lifestyle choices!

On the subject of the Zap, does anyone know the story behind DJ Andy Crock and his untimely passing in 1994? This period is a bit before my time.

I know there is a plaque on the wall of Cafe Rouge in his honour. I can't seem to find any information about him on the net.

Cafe Rouge used to be the Frock & Jacket which was one of the meeting places back then. Did he fall off a ladder or something when setting up a club night?

Phenomenal club. Eric Powells Friday nights were legendary. Brighton really was top of the clubbing tree back in those days. Great memories (although somewhat blurred) of great music, DJ's, crowd and whatnot!! :)

My era too. Was a member when Friday night was called "Red". Powell is still one of my favourite DJs ever, think he's in Oz now. I was often to be found going batshit mental to Dave Randall some time after 3 as well. Had some great (and some seriously worrying) nights down there.

Thinking about it the most worrying night of all was probably the Friday that Chesney Hawkes turned up. I suspect his mates STILL want to lamp me.

You're right, it was actually pretty terrible, and the video on YouTube backs that up. Voodoo Ray is classic, many many more where they came from.
