especially given nobody really knows the facts.

You can be certain though, that the event(s) that led to a gross misconduct charge, and for that charge to make its way through three very heavily scrutinised and regulated levels of process, and for the result to stay the same, were serious and tangible enough for an individual to form a pretty negative view of the now ex-manager. Detail of the 'crime' is not required, the board would have been doubly sure of their ground to have pushed this through.

Anyone who denies he was a brilliant manager for us either never watched any Albion in the years before 2009 or had a prejudice. No one who understands football can possibly disagree that he did an excellent job. The stats speak for themselves.

I don't think many people would deny this. However, ignoring the last few weeks and remembering the brilliant football, highest league position for over 30 years blah blah, Poyet is still, and always has been, a bit of a nob. And that is why he'll never be looked upon with much affection. The way his reign ended has just exaggerated this.

Any of you in the know care to PM me with what you believe actually happened??

Really intrigued with the comments that this all started rolling months ago. I remember thinking Poyet's comments about "this would be a good time to leave" after the St Patrick's day massacre were extremely bizarre.

Likewise, I promise to keep it a secret.

Would you pm me when someone pms you........I reckon its something to do with sporks myself #intheknow.

And then you can PM me.... ;)

thank god - i thought i was the only one not ITK.

if anyone is PMing - please add me to the list!

Technically in the eyes of the law PMing renders you as open to legal action as posting something in full view.

Well I haven't recieved a PM so assume nobody is ITK or they are afraid of legal action which is fair enough.

I've had one but it doesn't cover enough to explain the sacking, not that I'd tell you even if I knew now

I don't know how inflation would balance things out for gus/mullery comparisons, but they were different was, different footballing cultures. Also, what does that have to do with anything? I'm not disputing he was given more money than previous brighton managers, I'm saying that getting more money at a club than any previous manager doesn't mean you get more money than any other club. Why should gus see getting about 5m, more than any other manager in our history, as a reason to stay, if he sees, for instance, Blackburn spending 8m on a single player? My point is that it's a nice fact that he got more money than mullery, but what will be important for any manager is not what he got in comparison to people who started their stint with us five years after decimalisation of our currency, but what he gets in comparison to other managers right now.

Holloway had a 15m player from man utd, who, as it turned out, was the difference. That was somewhat tongue in cheek. I do not accept gus was outsmarted, not because of any great love for gus, but because of the way the games went. If games are fairly even, and a cross bar or fractionally off target shots stop one side scoring, and a lapse in attention from a defender lets a player score, it's not about the smartness of the managers.

That wolves went down, Blackburn barely survived and Bolton just missed out is irrelevant. They unquestionably under performed. If every team in the championship last year played to their potential, or to their pedigree, Bolton, wolves, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, would all have been up there. To suggest 4th place is barely achieving minimum expectation is the sort of arrogance many of our fans accuse Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, and others of and mock them for.

My league one players comment is meant that they were with us in league one and had to make the step up, plus cms who was with Peterborough before making the step up. Lualua was one I was hesitant to include, because technically he came down to us from the premier league, but he barely got game time there of any substance (an end of season nothing match). Two centre backs, two midfielders, and central striker, support full backs and a winger certainly make up a significant portion of the team.

One could also argue inexperience in England as a drawback for the likes of Bruno, Lopez and ulloa.

My point with the comments on the division and our players, again, is a) there is a certain arrogance in believing that we should have done better, b) some fans don't look at everything as a whole, that getting more money than any previous brighton manager isn't something that a manager with no particular allegiance to us (like with most players, the club is a job) will think of as a particular privilege, when others in the division have more money than us.

No, I'm not basing the budget comments on gus, I'm basing it on financial reports, newspaper coverage of reports, suggestions we have 5m budget this season, with barber suggesting it is in keeping with last season, etc.

OK. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Gus' target was, rightfully in my opinion, (and that of Tony BTW), to make the playoffs. He made the playoffs. He therefore MET expectations. He did NOT EXCEED expectations. He did well, but not fantastically well IMHO. If he had played his hand (playing resources) better, we could have finished 2nd. He didn't, and we missed out.

As for the playoff semi, I obviously saw a different game to you. Wurzel's tactics were to pressure us on the ball, and we couldn't cope (similar to Watford in the final). Gus had no plan B; he was outsmarted (as was Zola) IMHO.

Good post. Sums it up really.

Can't believe people persist with the 'top 2 squad' bollocks (A squad he put together anyway). It's football. FOOTBALL. Nothing is ever so black and white in football.

Same with the 'outsmarted by Wurzel' line. No he wasn't. Holloway played it tight. Hardly amazing after they'd been on such a poor run. Speroni kept them in it, then Zaha did what everyone knows he is capable of. Few of our players really didn't perform that night. We lost. Such is football. Wasn't some kind of genius tactical game from Holloway.

Same with the play off final. The worst I have ever witnessed. He'll need to up his game in August.

You are seriously underestimating Wurzel's tactical nous.

I've loved the football but have thought Gus was a bit of a knob since he defended Suarez in the World Cup hand ball incident. The last few weeks have reinforced that.

Can I be added to the PM list?

Especially when the vast vast majority of people on here don't know the reasons for his dismissal.

Just gutted it ended like this, for whatever reason.

Wish him all the best and I'm adamant that he will go on to be an excellent manager at the correct club.

He was at the correct club in the right job. But due to his arrogance, ego, and lack of appreciation, he thought it was too small a job for him. His career will suffer as a result and, yes, that is a shame. Hopefully, he'll learn a lesson, but judging by the Indy article, there is no sign of his having learnt to keep his ego and mouth in check just yet.

I disagree. They made the play offs despite Holloway not because of him. And when there didn't play much at all. But with players that they have, they were always going to be in with a shout.

100% This. I have supported this club for 55 years and I have never known a manager of this club be given so much support in the free running and finance of the team that Poyet received.
He should undoubtedly be up there among the best achievers along with Mullery with what he had been given to manage with, as did Mullery from Bamber.
If people want to talk about managers up there with the greats then in my lifetime the top man has to be Steve Gritt. He achieved what he did, with the worst support from the board that any manager ever received. Without Gritt, Poyet would have never managed this club. Did we ever hear Gritt moan about budgets in the Poyet way, did we hell as like. My signature sums Poyet up and as far as I am concerned he can p*ss off. He was probably the best supported manager and highest paid one this club has ever had and he repaid Bloom by constantly putting himself forward for other jobs and failing to keep his big gob shut when required. Rant over.

Spot on. Shame some on here just can't seem to accept that Gus is a good manager with a massive fault - namely, he put himself above the club.

Spot on. But some on here seem to have absolutely no faith in the board and that process, whilst clinging to the belief Gus' did no wrong.

I guess football as a whole will make some kind of judgement on this affair. Lets see where he ends up.

Sunderland hired Di Canio. So anything can happen. That said, I expect Gus' stock is considerably lower now than a few months ago.

Who has said they "have absolutely no faith in the board" ? Some of us hold a slightly more balanced view that the board are as fallible as Gus and it was most likely six of one and half a dozen of the other - both equally to blame. I personally don't think the sun shines out of Bloom's, Barber's or Poyet's arse.
