Quite sincerely I've been thinking this is a distinct possibilty for a long time. The loss of match day revenue, the collapse of the Chinese TV deal, and the £330m rebate due back to Sky from the Premier League will have a huge effect on many clubs this summer trying to operate at a sensible level. I'm really not expecting us to splurge a lot of cash that I honestly don't think we've got.

Just because the club spent close to £50m each summer in the last 3 seasons doesn't mean we will replicate that this transfer window. So many people seem to think we will spend 20 odd million on a forward as if it's a given - well it's not for me. Yes we all know we need strengthening but none of us know the exact financial state of affairs the club is really in. If the likes of Villa want to chance their arm by spending far more than they're bringing in, then that's up to them.

I trust Tony do what's right for the club and if by October 5th we have no new additions or only 1 loan player to add to the squad then so be it. You can't spend what you haven't got (unless you're Man City).

I do think there will be an addition or two but I wouldn't be surprised if at least one is a loan and any others at relatively low cost.

Your theory seems to fall down when you consider that we did offer this kind of money for Darwin Nunez. We couldn't have bid money we don't have. We're not Crystal Palace.

Re the rebate, as I understand it’s not all due back in one go but over a period of time, so perhaps not having the dramatic effect it might have been

Personally for me, any new addition will be relatively low cost with the aim of complimenting our current strike-force, with rotation at the core of the plan. Why would we waste so much time and energy on developing Aaron in particular, to effectively bench him by signing a ‘big time’ mercenary? Why would we seek to piss off our top scorer and brilliant striker in Maupay by suggesting he’s not up to it, in spite of his quite frankly superb debut PL season? No, no no says I! I foresee a sensible signing (if any tbh) designed to fit our rotation plan rather than tread all over the groundwork from last season... Aaron in particular looked a real player at Burnley, a genuine contender... I think he might well be our £20 million man, Yes... he’s already here.

It’s not about the team it’s about the squad.

I’m also a huge fan of Maupay and Aaron, but what if one of them gets injured or suspended? Or both?

Or what if we need something different in a game? If we want to be competitive in the top end of the division we need strength in all areas.

Yup. As Potter said in some podcast/show about his Irish players two weeks ago, Connolly had Murray, Maupay, Andone and Locadia ahead of him and they decided to make a pathway for him by getting rid (my words, obv) of Andone & Locadia. Its clearly a player the club believe a lot in.

If a striker signing is done I think it will be one of three options: a young player happy to rotate with the others, a cheap player who may not be Mr Top Scorer but a different type of player, or someone a bit more expensive but who is also very capable at playing as a winger (probably to the right).

I totally agree, I was really suggesting a complimentary signing vs this idea of the £25-30 million messiah from, I dunno, Italy or such like... we’ll go for a prospect I’m sure.

We did reportedly bid £25M for Nunez.

This would suggest that the club are trying to get another first choice striker.

I'd lean towards your side of the argument on this. Neal and Aaron stayed fit all of last season, but you can't rely on it happening again. We're going to have a large number of games in a compressed season and we know that GP clearly does like to have the option to play two strikers.

Personally I look at buying a striker as a sensible thing to do, as opposed to (to borrow a vulgar and demeaning term) upgrade on our existing strikers, both of whom I rate highly.

If you're talking about Nicolas Gonzalez of Stuttgart, who was snapped around Alexis Macallisters gaff....... The actual timing of that is about 2 weeks ago.

Not sure if quarantine was required from Germany?

Did Gonzalez reappear at Stuttgart after that incident?

No its not that one.

I like both Maupay and Aaron, though Aaron was hugely inconsistent last season. Pants for a big part of it. I don't share your argument. And we wouldn't say that to Maupay nor bench to sign a mercenary. But a better CF?

We're not a private member's club, looking out for our members. We're a competitive football club. Are either Maupay or Connolly the absolute best we could/should aspire to? If the answer isn't yes, then anybody who could potentially offer more, score more or push on NM and AC should be welcomed.

I don't believe for a second either of our 2 attackers wouldnt want to be off if Chelsea or Man U came in, the fact they're a bit below that level, doesn't mean we shouldnt hire better if possible for fear of upsetting either of them.

It's the nature of the beast, if they're good enough they'd still play if not then maybe they'd have to bide their time until injury or form gives them their opportunity.

If NM and AC play well, fantastic, doesn't mean we should accept the bar shouldn't still be raised further if possible.

The club and it's ambitions come first, the 25-50k PW football players are a resource to enable the club to achieve its aims. They are there to serve BHAfc interests, not the other way around.
