Storrington lost the Cricketers a few years back, taking it down from 4 pubs to 3...which ain't much for a place of that size.

Where my best mate lives in Scotland two years ago there were 8 pubs in the village and now there is only 3.
For the first 6 months of the smoking ban there most people just nipped over the border into England where they could still smoke!!!

Smoking ban eh? and how many Brightonians, let's say, 'slip over the border' into Asda where beer is a 1/6 of the price it is in city centre pubs?

Crikey, that was years and years ago.

Only last week the landlord of the Anchor in Storrington handed the keys back to the brewery citing the fact that he couldn't make a living running it, which leaves just the New Moon and the White Horse, alhough I understand the Anchor should be re-opening soon with a new Manager.

A couple of miles down the road in Pulborough, in the last 4 or 5 years or so the Red Lion, The Waters Edge, The 5 Bells and another pub opposite Suters the Butchers, I can't remember the name of have closed.

And in my village, West Chiltington, earlier this year the Elephant & Castle closed.

The West Chiltington Queens Head has been open and closed about 3 times this year but now seems to be stabelizing.

So all in all, in the last 5 years or so we have lost 6 out of 14 local pubs, and two have been struggling for about the same length of time.

Trouble is, when it is well over £3 a pint, £4 a glass of wine, you can't get a cab or bus, it's no suprise these pubs struggle to survive. They rely on people eating food because beer/drink sales will never cover their costs, and right now the economy is making many people tighten their belts.

Maybe there was too many before...

It does seem strange, when you actually take a step back and think about it, that most streets have a pub.

I have 4 within 200 metres of me and they are all doing well, I think that's because they are all so different though.

1 working mans pub
2 old style pub
3 bikers pub
4 chavvy youth pub

I used to do the books for the Alhambra when it was owned by Mrs Maxwell Joseph in about 1980 ish. She also owned The Quadrant. The Walmer Castle and a gay pub , The Sillwood or similar. She traded under the name of Lion Taverns, long before Dave Day. The Alhambra used to have live music in their big seafront bar but the manager never paid for the bands he used to allow them to make a collection. If they were any good he allowed them back if not it was goodbye.

The biggest cause of the closures is the pub companies charging unrealistic rents plus the taxes imposed on publicans which makes it more viable for people to drink at home.

Blimey, I used to drink in the Anchor when I still visited Storrington on a regular basis, it was always pretty chocker at the weekends...less so during the week though. It was always a bit of an odd village when it came to pubs, very few people ever drank in more than one, you kind of found the one you liked and stuck with it...only ever drank in the (Half) Moon twice, on both occasions someone tried to pick a fight with me, a fairly good reason not to go back again...I didn't.

The last time I was in the Queens Head there was a fight, including a member of the group I was with, the then landlord who looked like Henry VIII told us to leave...we had already been planning to anyway and beat a hasty retreat back to Storrington to lick our wounds. We had gone there for a few sherberts on Christmas Eve, as a result of smacking my back off a fag machine during the scuffle I couldn't sit down on Xmas Day without suffering excruciating pain.

Can't really comment on the pubs in Pulborough, as I grew up in Storrington it wasn't a place I was prepared to go for a drink...judging by my exploits in the Moon and Queens Head that was probably the best plan.

Sussex used to have some real gems when it came to pubs, hidden away from view and pretty much needing a map, compass and sixth sense to find them...places like the Bells and the Bax Castle.
