Had an interesting chat with Marina Pepper last night over a few drinks. First of all i'd like to apologise to you, Marina, if i was a little bit more prickly than i would normally be, but i had had a few beers. I have to say i got a little frustrated at your 'politician responses', being a bit vague and not really getting to the point. Nowt personal and i will gladly buy you a pint next time.

Anyway, she expressed three opinions that i found interesting:

1) Martin Perry is only involved in the stadium in order to give McAlpine the contract and make lots of dough, and the Blackpool situation concerns her.

2) The amount of money LDC are spending on this is tiny (i seem to recall she said it pales in significance compared to the amount they spend on bins or something.)

3) She denied the main decision making process had been done behind closed doors.

As has been mentioned on here before, her main concern is with the borders/AONB situation.

As Mr Paul Samrah would say...together we will win...???

1...) Someone will make a profit it on building the stadium, so I dont really care. The crap that Martin has put up with over the last few years has been almost unbareable. I have no problems with him whatsoever

2...) All things are relative. I suppose if they don't go against Mr Prescot again, they wont have spent that much, but of course, they will, and they run the RISK of having to cough up a whole lotta cash. One could argue that ANY money spent on what will eventually be a fruitless campaign, is money that could have been better spent on preventing flooding!

3...) Well, of course, that is utter rubbish

That statement taken on its own is probably indicative that she was talking complete and utter bollocks about everything else as well.

She had a right go at my dad, whilst she was canvassing for the elections last year.

She was screaming at him, becasue he said that they were destroying the football club.

Utter bollocks. Why take on a job for 9 years on the off chance that a) Prescott would say yes, b) The Albion would find the finance for the stadium c) The contract will be awarded to McAlpine.

It makes no commerical or business logic, she is a witch, and must be BURNED at the stake.

1) Martin Perry can award the tender to whomsoever he likes, based upon the criteria of time, cost & quality. It's a free market & it is illeagal to award a tender of such magnitude to any preferred bidder, without putting a detailed justification forward. Almost certainly the club will be going out to a European Tender to get the best value in terms of price and delivery schedule.

2) Then they should look at cutting back the amount of money they spend on refuse collection - they are clearly not giving the taxpayer value for money.

3) She is an idiot who, if she believes the decision was openly discussed at a full Council meeting either :

a) Isn't fit to be a Councillor responsible for spending public money.

b) Needs to stop lying to the people who elected her.

1) Is she a regular on NSC?
2) Liar
3) Total liar.
There is no point entering into any dialogue with people like her.

Apparently Marina's usual response when questioned on Falmer is to say she is all in favour of the stadium - but not there. When pushed further she says that it 'breaks all Government guidelines' and that LDC are opposed simply because if this 'illegal' development is allowed to go ahead then it will open the floodgates to millions of schemes up and down the country desecrating AONBs on the flimsiest of reasons.

I haven't spoken to her personally but a friend of mine has been a house guest of the Peppers on a few occasions (and is working with her husband Lee). That, broadly speaking, is what he's reported back.

1. If Perry is in it to McAlpine the contract and they also claim yer man (EDIT: Derek Chapman) is in it to get Adenstar the contract, which of their accusations is right?

There's nothing wrong with that statement, it's just very stupid and meaningless.

Which situation at Blackpool is concerning her? The one that Martin Perry left behind when he was headhunted by Dick Knight after Blackpool's chairman was sent down for rape?

It was a very shrewd piece of recruitment on Dick Knight and/or Liam Brady's part to get Martin Perry involved in the consortium. Even if Martin Perry was only concerned about McAlpine (whom he has not worked for in over a decade) is a bit like saying, 'well, Brighton are only interested in winning so that they can stay up'. So what if McAlpine build it, does she think they can't do the job?

What a silly woman.

That is utter nonsense as well. The government have a system of public enquiries to determine wether or not applications go ahead or not. The authority ultimately rests with the Deputy Prime Minister, not Lewes District Council.

LDC have NO MANDATE to get involved in decisions in AONB's in other parts of the country.

If LDC Councillors want to go and oppose AONB development on a national level, then they should RESIGN as councillors, and join Friends of the Earth, or some such other tree hugging group.

I know that, you know that and anybody who has paid the slightest bit of attention to what has been going on knows that - and I sure Marina does too, she's not stupid. I could be doing her a disservice but I'm pretty sure she's opposed on snob reasons simply because it's a football ground. She also knows that if the stadium doesn't go ahead the land WILL be developed, AONB or not. Check out the Local Plan, it says quite clearly that in the event if the Stadium not being built the land can be used for University purposes - anything but student housing. I'm sure she's read that.

Quite honestly I wish her and most of the other opponents would stop hiding behind this "oh of course you must have a stadium, just somewhere else" view and say what they REALLY think which: is "Look, Brighton is a lovely Regency town bordered by the sea and the beautiful South Downs so no you can't have a f***ing football ground. If you want to partake in such slum activities piss of and live in some dump like Portsmouth or Reading and let us keep Brighton as an ersatz, twee cod-Regency backwater full of nice rich people. Same goes for all these other ghastly monstrosities you want to build." I really would have much more respect for them if they were more honest.

If this really is the thinking of Lewes Council then I despair. Unfortunately as the decision to oppose was taken in camera we cannot know if they all think like this.

If they would like to preserve the South Downs why are they allowing an ugly bridge to be built across the A26between Newhaven and Beddingham. Oh I forgot it's for "nice" people called ramblers. You see they cannot manage to cross the road so we have to spend my guess 1/2 million £ for a handful of people to have their leisure pursuit.. :nono:

when I spoke to her before christmas, she had no idea where the ground was to be built - she thought it actually was in falmer itself.
one of her main objections was the increase in traffic through woodingdean, oh you mean B2123 I said, no the falmer road she replied - the woman has no idea of the location of the site, roads etc.
her prefferd site is waterhall, what about the traffic congestion in woodingdean caused by the residents of rottingdean to peacehaven I asked, and her response was 'but wouldn't they go into Brighton and along the A23?'
this is the future of the liberal democrats!!!!!!!

It gets worse and worse. Can't Rob at the Argus interview this woman and expose her ignorance? Oh. I forgot they are not allowed to talk to the press.
