Why is it hypocritical? Has he said anywhere that everyone should stop flying?

My comment is the hypocrisy of stating the band will not tour until a sustainable way of doing so has been found, coincidentally at the same time there's a significant public focus on the matter, oh, and a day before the new Coldplay album was released. If you can't see the hypocrisy in that and then flying the family out for a bit of skiing then I'll accept that it's me!

I'm afraid I can't see it as hypocritical as he's not advocating that everyone else do the same. Perhaps if he was criticising other bands for not doing the same, or criticising people for flying, then I'd agree it was hypocritical, but he's not.

If he is hypocritical in this then pretty much everyone who supports climate action is, as it's near enough impossible to live a zero carbon lifestyle at the moment. So anyone who flies, drives a car, eats any food that isn't grown or sourced sustainably, uses products including non-sustainablepalm oil, uses electricity from non-renewable sources etc is a hypocrite if they look to reduce the environmental impact of one area of their life, and post about it on social media?

Or, perhaps this has highlighted to others the high environmental impact that a band touring has (a lot higher than one family going on holiday!) and if they can find a zero carbon way of doing it, perhaps other bands will follow suit.

It's pretty much impossible currently to live in a zero-carbon way without a significant negative impact on your lifestyle (hence why the required action really needs to be led by governments), so anything any individual is willing to do that does make their lives somewhat less convenient or more costly, should be applauded.

And in Coldplay's case, I'm sure I heard a few years ago that bands these days make the majority of their money from touring and very little from record sales (which mostly goes to record companies). If that's still the case then I would be surprised if this is a commercial decision.

No one is perfect, but please don't use that as as reason to stop being concerned about climate change or stop trying to change your lives and those of others around you in a way to make a difference, however small.

Nor criticise those who are trying to make a change, even if they are unable to get it 100% right. Their heart is usually in the right place. This is the season to recognise the good in people and forgive them their flaws.

Trying to do good.........taking money from people who hope to see their idols in the flesh perhaps.......then saying ‘nooo, save the planet’.......and fixing off on holiday with celeb stars and friends to and from all corners of the globe.

1) Produce new album ready for release

2) Generate publicity for new album by banging on about not touring because of climate change

3) Jump on a plane and go off on hols abroad (when you can take a train to Fort William and go skiing in Scotland thereby supporting the British economy AND not adding to pollution by taking an unnecessary flight)

Mind you, he isn't the only one. The Royals preach to us about climate change before flying off around the world.

I don't disagree, it is a simplistic view. However I'd also say if you REALLY cared about the planet do the tour, use the profits to drive eco-changes, as I've flagged, by turning the stadiums into more sustainable venues and supporting research and or eco-activities. My take on this, simplistic as it is, is that if you really cared you wouldn't fly your family there and you'd walk the walk!

Just taken a look at Fort William (primarily as I’d never heard of it as a ski-resort) and it’s pretty much all closed bar one gondola and a button lift. Brilliant suggestion to go there.
