Great thread, and I've really enjoyed listening to various posters' contributions, thank you. I remember watching a film, Death in Venice, back in the early 70s for which the soundtrack included Gustav Mahler's Adagietto in 5th Symphony. The first time I heard it I was mesmerised and, more than 40 years later, it still haunts me and remains my favourite piece of classical music. It is sad, but simultaneously uplifting. When eventually I join the great Seagull in the Sky I'd be more than happy to have this played at my send off. Enjoy.

Mrs SUA Seagull and I were on holiday in Venice a couple of years back and attended a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons by the Venice Chamber Orchestra, in a small baroque church just off St Mark's Square. It was a tiny venue, an intimate audience of no more than 30 and the setting was stunning. The concert itself was quite beautiful. I believe that such concerts are a regular feature and would unreservedly recommend the experience to any NSCers visiting Venice as a great way to spend an evening there.

Classical is great to relax and think to, or just relax. I used to drive a cab and listen to the Southern FM or one of the main nationals and flipped the dial one day to classic Fm. The physical effect on me was instant. Relaxed. Stayed with it until Fri and Sat nights when the weekend warriors would demand more upbeat sounds. "WTF is going on with the tunes drive?" etc.

I've always liked the more popular classics but have recently started to try to listen to less well known stuff. There are some very good compilations and box sets on Amazon and at relatively cheap prices

Great thread. I've mentioned her before but Brighton resident, Fiona Brice is well worth a look. She's a session musician, arranger, part of the BBC Philharmonic and worked with loads of big names including John Grant and last year released an album of piano and violin compositions. It's called 'Postcards From'.

I'd add my admiration of Olafur Arnalds too. [MENTION=5001]The Merry Prankster[/MENTION] and I have long been fans. The bloke is amazing and I really do recommend getting into his back catalogue. This is my favourite:

Also well worth checking out are some of the Nick Cave/Warren Ellis soundtracks. Start with 'The Road'. I don't pretend to know too much about classical music and a lot of it goes right over my head but I do love the classical-themed albums by the Godspeed You Black Emperor/Silver Mt Zion collective. I'll get that, having bought that 4-CD Retrospective collection, which is fabulous. I've also been a big fan for a long time of Godspeed and Silver Mt Zion that [MENTION=5200]Buzzer[/MENTION] mentions, but would perhaps describe them as post-rock, but there's definitely a link to classical there. Olafur Arnalds is also great. I think his Island Songs came into my top three in AotY for 2016.

Island Songs is amazing, been playing the Broadchurch OST recently too. Similarly, Voces8 - Winter features a track of Olafur's also.
