I can't recommend anything in particular, but I've been going to The Proms for a few years now and I guarantee it will blow you away. Seeing it live, in that place, is such a treat. Got a couple of tickets for the Last Night in September - absolutely amazing.

Handel does rock my boat though.

My uncle was 1st Harpist in the Covent Garden Opera Company Orchestra for may years and when this record came out I sat him down and said Uncle Bernard this is proper music he listened to it then played it again to me pointing out the mistakes and notes that were wrong saying this should have been a b sharp or whatever and tore the piece of music to pieces and in fact said it was a very poor piece of music technically, but I still liked it but then I am not a professional musician of many years standing.

To be fair, the OP was asking for suggestions for getting into classical music, so why not push some of the gateway drugs? And while there might be superior artistry in a thirty-pass move ending in a mazy Vicente run that beats four defenders (to use a footballing analogy, as this is NSC), there can still be sublime beauty in the simple perfectly weighted through ball for CMS to run onto.

What I'm trying to say is, I wouldn't steer someone away from a piece of music just because it's accessible.

For one reason and another I have decided to explore some classical music. So far checking out some JS BAch on spotify and really enjoying it.

any recommendations?

Also interested in the use of classical music to focus the mind, alter brainwave patterns and improve learning if anyone knows anything about that.

If you like Bach, try Vivaldi.

If you want more Classical music, try Mozart's Figaro Overture.

Sibelius's Finlandia and Symphony No 5

Beethoven's 6th/7th/8th and the stupendous 9th symphonies

and maybe some Rossini ....

Once you get listening you will recognize loads you hear as background music.

I was going to post for Beethovens 7th Synphone.

Beethoven's Symphony no 9 is quite simply the most incredible piece of music ever written. Also like Gorecki, Sibelius, Mozart, Stravinsky.
