Alright Ponces (myself included)

For one reason and another I have decided to explore some classical music. So far checking out some JS BAch on spotify and really enjoying it.

any recommendations?

Also interested in the use of classical music to focus the mind, alter brainwave patterns and improve learning if anyone knows anything about that.

I used to listen to Gorecki (spelling?) a lot. Very moving and sad music about
Poland - but thought-provoking. Symphony of sorrowful songs.

I watched a South Bank show about the person -

Check out Arvo Part, an Estonian composer who is still alive. I borrowed a "best of" compilation and loved (most) of it.

A pedant speaks: Technically Bach isn't 'classical', it's baroque. Classical composers are people like Hayden, Mozart, and Beethoven. If you like Bach then try Vivaldi, The Four Seasons.

I've just started listening to a lot of Mahler who I was never much of a fan of until recently (late romantic period I think he comes under).

Oh I thought classical was an overarching term for....when I am not really sure for what. But hey I am learning already.

Don't worry, you're quite correct it IS used as on overall term for all types of, er, well we both know the type of music you mean! There are loads of different periods for 'classical music' though, a bit like there are loads of different periods for 'art'.

I have several classical compilation albums, I think they are something to look to for the novice. They tend to select some of the more popular songs and give you a chance o see a range of composers' work.

If you like Gorecki then you should try some Janacek - very good, especially the Glagolitic Mass.

Wagner is better than it sounds......

I think something like 'Classic FMs Most Wanted'
Classic FM Most Wanted: Amazon.co.uk: Music

Though, that appears to be limited or has just got very expensive.

I also have:
The Ultimate Classical Box: Amazon.co.uk: Music
which splits the songs into themed CDs (one disc for film scores, one for relaxing songs, one for romance, etc)

Maybe:
The Only Classical Album Youll Ever Need: Amazon.co.uk: Music
The Essential Classics Collection: Amazon.co.uk: Music
Classical - The Ultimate Collection: Amazon.co.uk: Music
The Best Classical Album...Ever!: Amazon.co.uk: Music

Thanks but I have got a load of those type of things from youtube that I use in the classroom but i am interested in using 'real' music for the same effect and looking into it a bit further.
