Even if in legal terms it's only a gesture, my heart tells me it's a brilliant one. My head says not to say any more until I'm back from Germany, have read the book and found out exactly what is going on. I don't think Dick is desperate for the limelight, he's just doing what comes naturally :)

This...

You know that for a fact? I find it very hard to believe. But I've no problem him doing so. It's the persons choice if they want to pay it or not.

It's a City Books promotion.

They charge for every event they put on (they're charging a tenner for Sir Ranulph Fiennes), except the ones within their own shop. Why they can't choose venues that would mean they don't need to charge £8.00, I don't know. I suppose it's also there to cover their 'free' wine and food.

Exactly. There must be 100 function rooms in Brighton that are free or close to it, if you undertake to put some money over the bar.

I thought he said the Albion had "cost" him over £2m and I didn't hear anything about getting £400k out, but I wasn't making notes so I could easily be wrong.

Neither was I but I'm sure it was said (I can't remember if it was him or the presenter) said something about £400k.

Again, I don't know it for a fact, but if you go on the City Books site or DK's Facebook page you will see apologies for the fact they've had to charge £8 and statements along the lines of him not making money out of it. He also mentioned on the radio that he has had to do this because the club wouldn't let him use his own bar.

I can't believe a book shop who are likely to sell a copy to everyone who attends would charge a guest speaker that much. Unless he's done some sort of deal on how much commission they get.

Regardless of what the club feared (and it looks like they had nothing to worry about), he has done more than enough to warrant a rent-free evening in a bar that bears his name. I hold Tony Bloom in just as much esteem as I do Dick Knight, but for me that is a really petty and ungracious thing to do that probably lowers my opinion of him for the first time.

I've not read the book yet so can't comment but I'd say it's pretty obvious/well known the pair of them don't get on. If I were in Mr Bloom's shoes I can't imagine I'd be falling over myself to offer help to a bloke that I didn't get on with especially when the thing he is trying to promote may or may not slag me or my regime off.

Fair enough, didn't know about the wine and food. What's the deal at the other venues. Is he charging for them? Do they come with wine/food?

It's not his bar. It's just named after him.

Why would they agree to do that, when he wouldn't send the club an advance copy of the book?

This - why should the club stock something when potentially its going to slag them off ?

Not sending the club an advance copy surely shows that there is something the club wont like in it - otherwise a copy would have been sent and it would have been stocked in the club store.

I understand that it is not Dick charging but why should anybody be able to charge for the privilege of selling their product. Will Tesco and Asda start charging an admission fee to go into their stores?

The £8 got you a fiver off the book, and hour or so of entertaining anecdotes from Dick a glass or two of wine and some food should you wish to indulge. i thought it was pretty good value last night and very entertaining.

If you can get along to one of the events I'd recommend it, well worth the three pound premium on top of the listed price of the book. Or alternatively you could just order it from amazon and save yourself the bother if that is your choice.

Not sending the book was to stop the club finding out in advance about the share sale ? ???

You didn't so much get wine with your book, more wine in your book, courtesy of Mr Knight - the clumsy oaf.

I presume they have a copy now ???

Still not too late for them to make a magnanimous gesture.

Can anybody really blame the club for not stocking the book or allowing a signing in Dicks? The fact is he wouldn't allow them to see a copy of it first. For all they knew, it could have been 200 pages of slagging off Tony Bloom, Paul Barber and Brighton and Hove Albion. Hardly something the club are going to want to sell on their own premises.

Will be interesting to see if they now do supply it as somebody will presumably have read it

I believe some of the food and drink at BHASVIC was actually provided by Dick himself. Certainly Mrs Knight made the parmesan biscuits.
